My 2013 SHO non PP with 139k miles has blown its 2nd turbo as of today while me owning it. (4th overall most likely seeing as previous owner has replaced both.) Just put some good condition used 20 inch black OEM 10 spokes with Goodyear Eagle RSA 2’s on it last Friday. The PTU is in good shape it seems with regular fluid changes being performed and the RDU is also due soon as well as trans fluid. The cold start rattle and phaser rattling makes me afraid to drive it in cold weather until everything quiets down and I baby it even after it warms up. It’s a wrecked car with a rebuilt title VIN is
1FAHP2KT1DG219988
in case anyone wants to see how bad it really was but all I know is the wreck was bad. Suspension is worn and clunks from the front over bumps and I’m at my wits end with it. To get all the parts I need to DIY the car it’s $1,150. Any opinion is welcome as to how to move forward. Just kind of fed up with the constant money pit that is the SHO. First picture is the front turbo I replaced, second is the rear that I left alone that blew today. Third is the front turbo I replaced in January today. Fourth picture is the “value” of my car but not really lol.

They can feel like a money pit. I had to replace my PTU just months after buying the car used with third party warranty that was junk. While the dealer was replacing the PTU (2100.00) they informed me that water pump was weeping. A few months later, had the water pump done (3900.00), that was 5 years ago. I lost the left turbo a few months back ( another 2300.00 to replace). I have 174k on the clock, use nothing but mobile 1 and do the maintenance religiously. As with any high performance vehicle, maintenance is an absolute. If you dont do it, they will bite back, hard. Buying any HPV used is a gamble. I am looking to do a full engine rebuild in the next year. Pull the motor, send it to the machine shop for complete rebuild. Then when that's done, new turbos from Gearhead plus their intercooler, high pressure fuel pump, hot pipes and tune. That's going to be roughly 13-15k. The thing is, I love my Taurus... She is a keeper.

Yup that's the sentiment... its a cat chasing tail game, maintain, hope for the best deal with the rest. i always think, if my yearly NON maintenance costs outweigh buying new - nowadays sedan $800-900/month, so the bar of 10K annual then time to buy new. YES with other calculations in there, is the body rusted out etc etc etc. i thought I was crazy all in 2 front calipers 170+K miles - rebuilt engine - replaced motor mounts - all sensors, temp oil, knock, and other PITA ones for that car, new water pump, new break pads all the way around - $10K on the Scion. New car - forget about it, even cheap economy cars, used - well now I start all over with like you mentioned with the PTU, what's hiding I don't know of? $15K + surprise parts and labor.

I would kind of expect things like that from a badly wrecked car with a rebuilt title?
I am sure you got it cheap and there was a reason for that.

My 2013 MKS Eco is at 110K miles with almost zero repairs. Why? Because we bought it at around 20K miles and kept up with the maintenance.

I never buy rebuilt wrecks.

Definitely never again. But hey I get to wrench along the way and learn how to do these things. Being only 22 I didn’t get this much experience with cars until the past year or two.

Great point! Think of it as a learning experience. Sounds like you have done a lot. But my main point was it's hard to blame the car when you bought it in that condition. I would expect things to happen regardless of the make or model of car.

I am also into Jaguar's and they can be very expensive. We have a consistent stream of guys buying cars cheap at auctions and then finding out why the car was sent to auction. Expensive luxury cars get no cheaper to repair as they age even though the market value keeps declining.

But you did it right and by that I mean you jumped in and did all the work yourself.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to own a car that not a lot of people know what it is or what it’s capable of. When taken care of I know they can be reliable which is why my wife and I are putting these thousands into the car to hopefully make it a travel cruiser to haul ass around the states and look good doing it. That’s kind of what keeps the wrench turning in a way

Education costs money even outside of actual schools. Welcome to the parts, tools, and bloody knuckle academy. SHO's have created many such amateur wrenchers

That’s what I qualify myself as these days. By the way, does anyone possibly know why my coolant won’t drain all the way out of the overflow tank? It’s level on jack stands and the turbos are disconnected with the radiator drain fully unscrewed. Should I try moving the drivers side front jack stand down one peg?

Or is that overflow because the thermostat is closed? When I take off the valve covers and everything I’ll open that up to let the rest of the coolant out if that’s the case.

Unless I've missed it, what's the root cause of the turbo damage? That looks ingestion related to me and if it's not fixed, most likely more are in the future.
This is a bit of an oxy *****, but is it possible to convert the GTDI to a naturally aspirated 3.5l?

It was probably the fact that I drove it with the old air filter for a few days and it most likely inhaled some dust through the ram air since I live on a dusty dirt road. Overall seems like it’s my fault but since the seals also blew on the one I just bought they warrantied it for me anyways. Here’s to hoping it all goes well this time since I’m going to flush the CAC too just to make sure everything intake side is spotless.

Is this one that had the issue with the exhaust manifolds flaking and falling apart. Why the F are the impellers chewed th shit.

That’d be my big fat ass lol i figured out the hsrd way…the manifold blew chunks in original turbos and toasted them then i went got gearhead stage 3 and the chunks continued until i talked to matt and figured out the problem 2013 and older had funny style exhaust manifolds they changed them up plus the newer ones have wayy better airflow
