I got totally inspired by this Drift car that’s got no headlight cover lenses and uses off-road lights for headlights.
The first time I had my headlight covers removed I paid a local guy to do it. Always had the itch to try removing it myself. After several YT videos I found one channel that has great success baking just about every headlight he’s ever modified at 240 for 20 min. It doesn’t create any fumes, it doesn’t melt the headlight plastic that’s sitting directly on the metal shelf. It just gets it nice a pliable. You just need to preheat the oven first and do the full 20 min.
You can leave the headlight wires and everything inside, there’s a small bolt in the upper corner by the fender that needs to be removed before you pull them apart, otherwise just take out the headlight bulb. Work in a corner and remove that bolt, and start gently prying, making sure to clear each tab and it comes apart pretty easy.
I decided on a pair of VisionX 15 degree 3.7” Amber Halo DRL lights.
They will be plenty bright I am getting 2 pairs to use 2 pods per headlight. The Amber DRL can also be a turn signal and when you turn them on they are white LED not Amber. I think the Amber looks like dragon eyes, here is what they look like lit up
Since they are waterproof having no cover doesn’t matter. Under the headlight the cover filled in a large gap of space so I went out and bought 5052 3/16 aluminum sheet metal and made some bottom block off plates. Then came up with a eyebrow too.
I went from cardboard to aluminum and I’ll just rivet them to the headlight housing. I’m at the point now where I can clean them up, touch up the lines and edges and paint them. The off-road lights should be here early next week so I hope to get this done by then. Can’t wait to see how it looks. The bumper slides right on, got some more trimming to do with the chassis splitter and then I’ll wrap it, but it’s good enough to stand on now with no exposed rods here on out.
