aaron,
The A/C compressor clutch has two surfaces. One is on the front of the A/C pulley. The other is on the clutch face, ie the part that is bolted to the end of the A/C compressor (it can be held on by a nut on some model years).
The end of the compressor crankshaft is splined and so is the part of the clutch face that fits over the crankshaft. Inside the splined part of the clutch face are one or more washers. The washer(s) are used to "shim" out the clutch face so that is is a specified distance from the pulley clutch surface when the clutch is NOT engaged.
In order to adjust the distance between the two surfaces different thicknesses of shims (washers) are used. For example, if your two surfaces have a gap between them of .025 and you want a gap of .035, you add a .010 thickness washer (or a washer that is .010 thicker than the one in the face).
If you plan on using the clutch pulley and face, that is you are not replacing the old ones, then DO NOT pry the face off with screwdrivers between the surfaces. This will scratch the clutch surfaces. Use the special tool for removing an A/C Clutch face, or use wood shims driven between the surfaces to pry the face off of the compressor crankshaft. rangerj
