Hey Gang! Mostly a lurker, but from time to time I do post.

I'm bike guy, not so much a car guy, (hey, at least my cage is a SHO, right?), so bear with me.

About 3 years ago I tried a pair of the cheapo Summit 2.25 offset, inlet/outlet mufflers and was hoping for more sound, but they did the job. Well,... the left one has developed some rust to the point where she needs replaced and was looking at a possible upgrade to something with some growl, but I will not stand for any rasp/tuner farting in a can sound!!

Been reading about some possibilities with Dynomax, Flowmasters and Magnaflows, but it seems the key is replacing the resonator with a Cherry Bomb/glass pack muffler. My pipes underneath are all OEM so any advice on sizes an length of the res would be appreciated, bigtime!!

And some personal input on muffler selection would be cool, too! ;)

Thanks in advance!!

Big Dave

Flowmaster makes a good kit for the SHO. By far my personal favorite aftermarket option, although Im not sure if you can get them anymore. Nice tips and a sweet sounding resonator that eliminates most of the rasp.

i recently upgraded to a 3 inch catback while i was in there we changed the Y collector to a better flowing piece.that seems to have chilled out the rasp quite a bit.

it's utterly impossible to make a V6 SHO sound good. Better, yes...but not good. Give up now and go put money into something worthwhile....like, say, feeding a starving African kid or something like that.

My input, if whiteman_01 doesn't post, PM him, he has a full back (minus headers that is) custom job that is AWESOME, think his cat is like a dodge 360 cat or something like that, to a custom y-pipe to flowmaster 40's? Joe correct me if i'm wrong at all, but his sounds really really nice, it gives a deep rumble at lower RPMs. Also if you like the sound of the secondaries it will give the engine more breathing and it sounds even better when they open.

Thanks for input, guys!!

I hear ya', Beaudeen!! I may just stick another Turbo back on and deal with what I got. I hate to start something only to have it sound like crap, then start throwing more $$ at her.

The SHO Source for the whole enchilada looks like a nice set up, but is more $$$ than I wish to spend, since everything is solid on mine except the left muffler. Also, I really don't drive my SHO more than 3000 miles a year. Winter time she's parked and I run the Subie all winter and well,.. when the weather warms up into at least the 50's,...I'm on 2 wheels. :woo-hoo:

I did see something about the GT mufflers and may give that some consideration if some can be located.

SuperHO, you're sooo right!! I could just save that coin, get another $15 Summit Turbo like I mentioned above and spend the rest on that starving African kid. And what do you know,.... here's a pic of one of mine now!!

The Quickflow's sound much better than the old summit turbo's i had on there...twice the price, seem like twice the muffler though...I guess time will tell

If you have an MTX SHO, an equal length high flow y-pipe with high flow cats is the best power/$ upgrade and adds a nice quiet whoosh sound when you get on it. No reason to replace the stock exahust piping unless there is problem with it, as it is all stainless. Any aluminized piping and mufflers (Dynomax exhaust, for example) will rot out in about 3 years if you live in the north; not worth spending all the time and $ IMO unless it is all stainless or you'll just be buying it all over again 3 years later.

I had a nice catback on my 95. For the resonator I used a 5" round Magnaflow (suggested by another forum member), a magnaflow rear y, and 2 thrush welded mufflers with hedman headers stainless tips, IMHO it had a nice low rumble at idle.

Agree

Here is what I use, and it sounds perfect::

They are pricey, they can be hidden well. you will also want a nice long resonator get rid of the rasp, about any muffler sounds like crap with out it. I would also suggest the mandrel bent y-pipe with high flow cats, equal length.

here is how these look properly mounted.

Those look really good. Do you have a shot of them from the rear?
