exhaust questions

I'm a bit off a noob around cars but i'm learning. I was poking around the forums and I see alot of things refering to a "catback exhaust", does that just mean there is a cat on the exhaust? I see when you buy a muffler it says it's a catback, does that mean you can use it on a catless system? what are the advantages to a catless system? also what does a resonator do? all at catback system is the exhaust from behind the cats. all cars are supose to have cats on them, i run a catless system on my car and you actualy lose some low end power. as far as a resonator it helps to tone down or get rid of rasp in the exhaust

Catbacks are from from behind the cats on back and includes the resonator and mufflers: Catback

The cats are on their own and contained in the y-pipe. The y-pipe is better for the top end but you loose the low end. You also get rasp. Cats keep the low end and the sound is more mellow: Y-Pipe
