Octane and available energy are not the same thing. Winter blends are not just about ethanol. And don't ignore the local storage/dispensation conditions.
Didn't have any bad bad knock issues but could never get OAR greater than about -.50 on Chevron 94 octane. Matt suggested 2 gals of E85 with a full tank of 94 and almost instantly it popped up to -.92.
I'd love to run this combo into the future but I'm not sure if I'm harming the engine long term. I do have the xdi 35. I forgot to ask Matt.
Are you worried about the knocking on 94 octane, or adding a couple of gallons of flex fuel? You are already on E10 - moving up to E20 won't hurt.
Why did you get the Xdi 35 if you weren't running higher blends of ethnaol?
Thanks for that. E85 just recently became available locally so you're right I will need to get an updated tune file given there isn't any harm. The stock tune is calibrated to E10, which is what you are likely using. Ford states up to E15 is OK in their cars. Many here are running E30 long term without issues. LTFT fuel trims will adjust the fueling.
Look around the internet is you'll see many people running flex fuel on non-flex fuel engines. The plastic and stainless steel fuel lines can take it. Biggest concern on our engines is running out of pressure with the HPFP. You took care of that already. Check with your tuner, but it you have easy access to flex fuel, then take advantage of it.
So with Matt's tune it sounds like you aren't to fanatical about the measuring? Do you have the sensor to monitor it?Well I learned with my e85, I can't mix any less than 6 gallons per fill-up or it doesn't max out -4.0 KR. I usually go with 6~7 gallons when I get below 1/4 tank.
I'm running Matt's dedicated e30 tune 90% of the time and AJPTurbo e30 tune the other 10%.
If you are always certain you have more than 30% ethanol in the tank is there any reason to monitor anything on the dedicated e30 tune?No sensors. I just monitor KR and Lambda.
It doesn't matter if you have too much ethanol as long as you have the upgraded pump.
I've run 10gallons e85 to approximately 7 gallons 93, without any issues. The gains seem to taper off though. I'd say somewhere around e50 is the cars sweet spot. Although with more bolt-ons that could change. I'm done modding this car though. Just gonna ride it out for a little while longer.
