I feel I have to say I am sorry for starting any flames on the subject of ESPs and our cam promblem. I stated in a earlier post that my motor was replaced under ESP by the previous owner. That was the case, but the motor popped due to the fact that he drove though a large water puddle during a bad rain storm, and the car sucked water up the intake. When the car came in our shop (not running) he made a commit about it making a ticking sound anyway before he evn drove though the water. (cams?) I mean if our SHOs were to lose a motor due to a tech. at a dealership not putting 6.5 quarts of 5w30 but he put in 5 quarts of 5w20, would Ford give us a hard time? Even though it was the dealerships fault? Just some food for thought.

The bad thing about the ESP is that it will only cover up to the value of the car. With the cam problem the market value is dropping. Most SHOs that have a cam go out now will still cost the owner a pretty penny.

"but the motor popped due to the fact that he drove though a large water puddle during a bad rain storm, and the car sucked water up the intake."!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I heard of that car. There was one of the same exact specs as you say, the owner was in a bad rain storm and went through a large puddle and water sucked into his intake, essentailly totaling the engine. His insurance wouldnt cover the car so they just cut him a check for the value, as for the car they auctioned it I think, the repair bill was more than the cost of the car. They wouldnt ESP it either beacause it was his fault. Could this be the car you have. If so it is a solid peace of SHO. I think it had like 21K when they were selling it. I almost bought it. Had no wear what so ever.....Wierd!?!?

No, wrong car. This car was bought new at my dealership, and the motor was replaced by our dealership. The engine was replaced at 71,000 miles. I bought it with 78,000. I am the second owner, making him the first. I have all docs. and repair orders on this SHO. Still a little strange, but not my car.

Though this is obviously true, I discussed this with the owner of our local Ford dealership. He said the value of the car is determined by the submission of the dealership. They normally use book value as the basis for this determination. In Canada it is Black book, in the US, Blue, I believe. The retail value is used, not the wholesale value. And there is a range depending on the condition of the car. It is in this area that your relationship with your dealership is pretty important. If they hate you down there, they are not going to return a valuation at the top of the range, while if you have a good relationship with them, they will. This range is very large, and where the value is put within it is pretty much totally subjective and at the discretion of the dealership. The dealer owner told me that Ford had never questioned a value he had submitted so long as it was within the book valuation range.

At the moment, looking at the Black for for last month (Dec '02), I suspect a new motor (about $15K, CA) is more than the medium value for a '96 SHO, but less than the medium value for a '97 SHO, and a good deal less than the values for '98 & '99 SHOs. Obviously, this will change as the value of the car declines over time. But right now, if my engine blows on my '98, the value at the center of the range more than covers the repair cost, so my ESP repair would cost me $100, the minimum repair fee for a visit. If I had a '96 in the same situation, my ESP would be expired anyway, so it really would not matter since they only go for 6 years maximum. but if I had a '97 and still under ESP and the dealership gave me that medium value, I would still, at the moment, be only paying the $100. If they gave me the bottom value, I would be paying a good deal more.

So be nice to your dealer. :)

So with this in mind and the NADA prices posted on V8sho.com,

What would you say a mint condition 96 with 53K on the clock is worth?

Not trying to sell it ( not anymore, anyways ) but I'd like to know because I have yet to get my cams welded.

$9675 is what NADA says for in New England in average condition with that mileage. If I remember the extra clean catagory from the Black book, it was worth about $1800 CA over average, so converted to US that is about another $1100. Say $10,800 retail. But I must admit, I never really use NADA. I always look things up in the Blue of the Black book, since those are what the car dealers actually use themselves.

Stephen, our dealership uses NADA and Galves for trade in prices. The only time we use Blue book is when the customer says they want blue book for the trade. Then I go online and show them the price on KBB.com, and sometimes meet them half way. KBB is always $1000-$500 more than what we offer the customer. So in our case with the cams KBB is the way to go thumbs_u
