My '95 is getting up there in mileage and I'm entertaing thoughts of a Gen III. In searchin around a bit and looking at the autotrader listing for my area, it came up with 10 within 100 miles. Most of them have ~60-75k on them and are in the neighborhood of 6-9k, I like that mileage but the price seems a bit steep. Is this what they are going for, I assumed they would be a bit cheaper. Their is one with 105k tryin to get 5.5k out of it, which I doubt will happen.

So, is this the ballpark of average prices for these things with that mileage, or are these car lots over pricing their Tauri?

Thanx, Doug

i don't really know what the prices are these days. I'd like to get 9k for my car and it only has 60k miles and in good condition, but i don't think anyone will really pay that much. 6 grand for one with 60k miles and in good condition is a little more like it, but if i were buying one, i'd think you could get it cheaper than that. just tell them about the cam issue and say you want it cheaper so you can afford to get the cams welded. it'll only cost you about 500 to get them welded, but you could talk them down like 1500 with that.

If you go over to NADA.com 5.5K is around normal with that many miles. That is of course if it's in excelent condision.

Yeah I looked up our 98 last night, with only 42k and excellent condition it was only worth a little under $9k bluebook private party sale.

I just picked up my 97 for >$3,600 but it has 150k, welded cams...

Here's what I usually see...

For V8 cars with under 100K, $4500-$5000. For cars with over 100K, around $3800 seems to be average. Any age/mileage I'll generally see '99's sell for slightly more, and about $400 more if welded).

A single online "blue book" price really can't be considered authoritative. I usually recommend taking the median values from http://www.kbb.com , http://www.nadaguides.com , and http://www.edmunds.com and averaging them for a more accurate idea of what the car should sell for.

Well, I have several problems with that...lol. My '95 with everything in my sig, I figure that if I was lucky I could get 3.5k for it. That is obviously not selling it to an enthusiast. She is just getting up there in mileage and doesn't have any *serious* problems as of yet but you never know with these things. But, the must less maintainence intensive Gen III are really appealling and they look very comfy and I just like them.

I was surprised with these prices, I figured they'd be much cheaper. Buying one I also consider an extra $500 for cams (but I would talk down the price of course) and looking at SHO's with ~80-100k I would be lookin most likely for a tranny soon after which is another 2k.

Plus my SHO I have done so much too, I would be selling a new car to someone. But, at the same time I am inclined to do so. But, also I am now in my Junior year of college and not working at the moment (work on breaks and summer) I don't know that buying a Gen III would be the wisest move.

I can't figure out if I am dreaming or if I should seriously consider moving up in the SHO world....

Thanx, Doug

Seemed to me the GenIII's in the LA area were about what you were finding. I bought a 98 with 60K for $7000 in June. It was in superb condition, with only one blemish on the paint, and a practically showroom interior. I still think I could have talked the guy down another $500 to $700, but I am terrible at wheeling and dealing. He had listed it for 8000, I was dying to buy it. I'm still kind of kicking myself for turning down a black 97 that had only 34K in the Santa Monica area. I think if I'd pressed on, I could have gotten him down to 7K. Oh well, I'm happy with mine.

I highly recommend the Gen III. Only thing is, I think you should expect alot more than $500 for the cam weld. Take it to someone with experience on SHO's (I have a recommendation if you want), and usually the job is going to be more like $700 to $1000 if you factor in parts and coils (if you get new coils). I've had alot of time in both cars (GII & GIII), and unless you're really into racing it, and more into just having a nice car with a strong engine, the GenIII is really a better all around car. Other than the cams, not too much to worry about either. I'd say keep shopping around, until you find one UNDER 60K for sale by owner (there are more around than you'd think), and then really really bargain with the seller. So few people know what an SHO is, they are kind of a tough sell unless the buyer is an enthusiast. Just advice.

Good luck.

MT,
Thanx for your advice, where exactly are you down here? I've had my '95 for almost 3 yrs and i've done most of the work myself, but she is gettin older now. But, yes I am lookin for a strong Gen III not to race but to drive with a good strong motor and alot less miles than I have now. My parents suggested lookin into a SLO but I can't see that happening now. We should get together some time...... Also, if you see any nice Gen III's around your area give me a holler, I've only been looking on autotrader in this area and only found about 10 for sale. Who did your cams? The only Cali place I knew of was in Sac town and around $500.

Doug,

I live in LaCrescenta with my wife and our 2 little girls. Pretty close to where you go to school. What school are you at? CalArts and College of the Canyons are the only schools I know of up there. I also have relatives in Carmel Valley, near Salinas. I work for a buisness here in SoCal that has a location up in Valencia, so I'm up in your neck of the woods every couple of months.

Got my cams welded by Russ & Chris in Placerville (near Sac, maybe same place you mentioned). They are outstanding. It was $700 for labor. I was suprised there were no SoCal cam welders when I bought my car, but the trip to Placerville was fun anyway.

I will definitely let you know if I see any good GenIII's for sale. I'm always looking around just to compare what I got to what is out there. And by the way, NO on the SLO, my friend. ;) You are right on, much, much better to get into a low mile SHO. Heck, even a high mile SHO is better. If you're not going to get that Yamaha mill in a Taurus, might as well get an Accord!

Post your email address. The guy in Santa Monica I mentioned may still have his car for all I know. I'll try to find out. Mine is [email protected].

Yes, Carmel is about 10 minutes from my house, I live right off highway 68. I go to The Master's College, right off San Fernando road, about 3-4 miles from the 14.

Yes, those are the two Sac guys that I knew of that welded. For some reason I assumed they were a bit cheaper, guess not.

I am in no way gonna be able to drive a SLO, so that isn't an option. I prefer my high mileage '95 over a low mileage SLO....

I would appreciate the lookout on the Gen III's my problem is that my SHO needs a few things worked out if I were to sell it, which I'm not sure is possible after all the $, blood, sweat, tears, cursing..........and miles I've put on her. Along with that I don't know how much I could get for her and being a poor college student I'm not sure if I can go for a 7k SHO, so I'm not sure how things will pan out. But, things always change I guess.....

My email is: [email protected]
