96 SHO, 103k, welded, but....

lots of long distance driving this weekend. 10 miles away from home, seems like the trans slipped out of gear, the RPM spiked and ****, i'm bleeding blue oil smoke. couldn't really diagnose as it was on the side of the freeway, but i did crawl under a bit and there was oil (not sure if it was trans or motor) on the drivers side only. nothing on the top end.

thoughts?

If the engine was still running and your tranny slipped out of gear, I would say it was the tranny. That is similar to what mine did when it went south.

I will offer this though. If it is your transmission, pay the extra to see if they can cryo treat your parts. Check with Paul Nimz aka SHOZ123 or Kirk to get some good recommendations for upgraded parts. I believe that the weakest part of the Gen 3 tranny is the torque convertor. It may cost a bit more but the best overall solution for getting right can be a mixture of an improved (in what ever way) torque convertor, cryo treated tranny parts, Trans Go shift kit and last but not least, maybe even the chip from American Motorsports. Armando's chip seems so far to do good things and fixes the whole torque convertor / AC problem which some have felt can lead to a shorter tranny life.

Other than that, there are a good few others here with FAR more knowledge than me as in the two guys mentioned above.
