I'm not sure this has ever been addressed here. And this may add up to what is the lamest posting yet, so my apolgies to all you veterans. Anyway...
I had seen many references to what would be descibed as the "engine surging slightly" or "running even better that normal" when any ECC button that engaged the A/C comprssor was pushed. I too had the same issue.
Well, I figured out what was making the engine run so counter-intuitively well. As the weather has warmed recently, my sone one day said "Hey, turn on the a/c." I, trying to be a good father, complied. Nothing but hot air. I thought this was strange seeing that I'd just last year replaced the A/C clutch, coil, and field (along with a new relay module as well.)
Long story short, the field coil clip had worked its way loose or got gummed up from all the winter mess. A quick jiggle later, A/C working again in all of its glory.
I then realized that it had probably been like that all winter and seeing that I never actually wanted cold air, I never noticed. Anytime I hit Defrost or Auto, the PCM gave it its pre-programmed "boost" to overcome the added drag from the compressor, which never came - giving the car the "surge" that I'd noticed and read others talking about here.
Just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone else had the same weirdness happening.
All the best!
