I spun a rod bearing on my 3.2 I would like to rebuild the lower half of the engine. I know the main and rod bearings are available, however I am not sure about the rings, and pistons if needed. Any thought on this. I don't want to invest in the rebuild and find out that there are essentials that I can't get. Thanks

Hey Bazooka. The rings are available on Ebay. I saw them today while checking for my 94 SHO parts. I dont remember the price, but you can get them. Do a search for SHO rings I would think.

how many miles are on your SHO?

I HIGHLY doubt that rebuilding the bottom end, beyond the rod bearings, is worth it. Afterall, SHO engines are known to last well beyond 200K.

Skipper, while some would disagree with me, I would consider a complete bottom end rebuild a swap of rod bearings and mains. Of all the motors I've dug into, some of which had gone 200,000 plus miles, I've never seen a cylinder wall with a ridge at the top or without hone mark.

In your case, you're looking at atleast having the crank reground and then tracking down some oversized bearings. It's easier to just swap the shortblock.

Mike, I have over 330k miles. The car has run flawlessly until about 6 months ago. Either the computer went or one of the coil packs or both since it just stopped while driving and it doesn't restart. No codes, not even a 111. The only other probs with the car after 10 years and well over 200k miles is the power antenna, and exhaust leak in the cat, That is a pain to fix because of the protective guard they put on it.

Mike and NotSoSlowSHO - I was not reccomending just changing out the rings, but simply suggesting that they are available.

Realistically, to do the mains you're going to have to pull the motor out of the car. Knowing that, IMHO you'd be better off finding a used, lower mile block, and putting new rod & main bearings in that. You won't know until you open up your existing motor if the crank is even serviceable, and if you find that the crank will have to be turned down or replaced, the replacement block option will almost definitely be the cheaper and more reliable option.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have 120k on the engine and If I can get by with just reworking the crank and relacing the bearings, that would be great.

I have a set of 3.2 pistons & rods if you need them...I was going to use them on a 3.2 build-up, but went a different route.

Both the mains and the rod bearings can be changed without taking out the motor. You've obviously taken good care of that SHO so there would be no reason to start with an unknown block.
