no engine mod is allowed in california unless it has a C.A.R.B. exemption. My car passed with a catless y-pipe because it was in good running shape. MAF's, and LPM's usually cause a lean condition that sends the NOx too high and you fail. Cams will cause you to fail as well.

Prophet,

The California governing body that oversees the polution test, The CARB (I think that is its acronym) is talking about adding to the test proceedure so that they can tell when you have had a "performance chip" in the car, and removed it for the test!

They have also requested that the manufacturers solder in the "chip" so it cannot be removed (as easily).

I do not know how far they have gotten with these programs, but they are serious. I got this from one of the car magazines some time ago.

The point is, that you should not make any modifications that you cannot easily reverse.

Remember that California's most important commandment is, "thou shalt not pollute the air".
I guess you could always register your car to a post office box in Nevada or Oregon! LOL, rangerj

Ive saved all the parts that ive upgraded,I figured just in case if i had to reverse things for a while.

I was curious ,ive never read a response to this question here before.

The water injection is suppost to help address the pollution issue,I like that.

I have passed smog test here in Orange County, CA three times with all the bolt on upgrades. I used to worry about the cone filter, but I think the can fools the tester into thinking its stock. Everytime I open the hood they go wow.

You have to be kidding me! I wouldn't think that the actual number of auto enthusiasts who modify their cars is significant enough to warrant such actions. It's like CPU manufacturers clock locking their CPUs to prevent the .005% of computer uses from overclocking their computers.

California is easy, all you have to do, is know the right people for a certificate. (At least in the late 80's and early 90's)Oregon and Washington have state employees doing the checks and not shops.

My 94 wizzed though the test as equipped. This year, if you own a 96 or newer, they don't even dyno your car, they plug into the ODB 2 port and if your not throwing codes, you pass.
