Engine Knock

I have a 2013 model and it started to have a knock in the engine. I took it to ford and they said that there was metal shavings in the oil and it will need an engine replacement. I really don't want to do that so is there any other way to make the engine last a little longer or try and solve the problem. Anything will help.

You can drive it but there is no telling how long until it fails completely. Not sure about the size and from where the shavings came from exactly, but I would assume a replacement engine or vehicle is in your future. obviously pieces of metal are coming off moving parts that are now damaged, smaller particles may pass the oil filter and recirculate like abrasives internally and some may potentially clog the oil pickup screen and reduce oil flow. This is all based off of what you posted. Not sure what was actually discovered. I wish I had a better plan of action for you.

I wouldnt go by what they said unless you were there to see the metal shavings. The engines can knock because of some sensor wire being chafed on the side of the cylinder head. I thought it was maybe the knock sensor. Do a data log and see what it shows or cel codes.
Check this wire to see if its rubbed through.

I don't disagree with this. Did you get to see the shavings? With a cost this high, looking around for other causes and second opinions are not a bad idea.

Pretty sure he means an audible knocking/ticking/banging sound coming from the engine.

Like it or not, she gone. You could of course just drive it until it lets go completely and leaves you stranded but that's probably not the wisest strategy. Don't wander far from home with it!

First things first. Unless there was an outside circumstance that caused you to bring it to the dealer, you don't appear to have the skills needed to circumvent this issue on your own. Again, it simply appears this way on the surface. Fill in the details if I am mistaken.

If that is the case, regardless of where you go, the cost is likely to be beyond what it sounds like you have available. So my recommendation is this, get some skills. Get some more detailed information, even a video of this knock you are talking up about up on the site and start getting them hands dirty, or wear gloves.

The limited amount of information you provided can't possibly get you an answer.

That was my first thought for sure. I'll endorse a hail mary and say take it for a 2nd opinion or check some wires if someone is questioning original work-- or terrified of the potential cost. YOLO baby, roll them dice.

Your "inexpensive" option is to put new bearings in the engine in the car - not easy but if the bearings were bad from something like the water pump leaking into the oil, there is a possibility that just putting bearings in the engine will make it last another 50k miles. Of course changing the bearings may make no difference at all, depending on what is really wrong with it.

Coincidentally Tech Garage is going over knock diagnosis right now on Motor Trend. Season 7 episode 5 if you want to look it up and try to narrow it down yourself. Without hearing for ourselves we can't rule out that it could be something in the top end.

Meh it wasn’t super informative anyway. Pretty much said hey get a stethoscope and listen. I may have jumped the gun by posting that as soon as the episode started. But point is that in their case what sounded pretty nasty turned out to just be a bad timing chain tensioner.
