I had a similar prob and I thought it was the Alt too , but turned out to be the idler pulley.
It sounded like a very small but very loud s/c.

well it is very easy to diagnose which pulley it could be. all you need is a full can of WD 40. spray on the pulleys that you think could be probable, and the noise will go away momentarily while the bearing is lubed.

i wouldnt be supprised if it is the waterpump...

just playing it by ear it sounds like its to the right of water pump . and to left of altanator .......... could be idler pulley ........ but there is another pulley directly under that one . not even sure what that pulley is at this point.

It is the lower ldler pulley it is the one that typically goes out. Ford still has them availible for I think around 100.00. I also have a few laying around. It is the lowest pulley. the bolt head is 14mm. Good luck

Take a long extension or something....touch the nut in the middle of the pulley with the extension while the car running and hold the extension to your ear...you'll know when you find it.

when to **** the 'actual' waterpump pully, you would have to aim the WD40 right in towards the timing cover...the pulley that the belt is on is more like the 'drive shaft', or an extension to the actual pulley...so try getting it right in there. but if you havent had the 60K service done, i would be thinking about that.

My ATX makes a slight whine at idle and I could SWEAR that its the alternator, also the whine pulsates and the headlights and all other electrical components dim in and out in sync with the engine's pulsating whine. Ive got a lifetime warranty on this alternator so I might as well get a new one.

Yeah, I sprayed some **** on the pulley and got a response whereas the whining noise momentarily disappeared. I'm not sure which pulley it is, but it's the closest one to the firewall, which seems to be the biggest of all the pulley. This one is call what?

Mine is very loud, and smoking! What's the labor time on this job? Thanks!
