I need help!! I have a 1997 Gen 3 Taurus and it has started chattering, sounds like rockers, but I'm not sure. I had started purchasing plugs, gaskets, and camshaft position sensor to begin some tuneup maintenance, and this chattering started. I have 115400 miles on the car, the cams have not been welded. Since I have experience with several welding processes, I was going to do that while I have everything apart. Can anyone give me some insight into this chattering? The sound it makes sounds like when an engine is low on oil, but this taurus has never leaked any oil. Please help?

Sounds like you have already experienced a cam failure. The engine might be salvageable, but the more you run it the worse it will get. I would say not to start it again, untill you can get a Gen III pro to take a look at it. The noise I think is the valves hitting the piston if I'm not mistaken. If you want to keep it goin I suggest not put that engine in motion again untill it is timed and welded.

Sounds like cam failure to me too. I just do not understand how people know about the failure problem with our cars, but do not get the cams welded until they hear the dreaded tick noise.

Do not start the car. The next turn of the key, could be the last. On V8SHO there is a list of people who will weld them up. Find one close to you and contact them. Good luck.

I would be worried about the rockers making all that noise. :bonk:

Seriously, though get them welded, do not start that car again, and good luck.

Jeez! Just because the car is making some noise, does not mean it has failed!

There is a soundclip somewhere on www.v8sho.com of what a healthy motor and a failing motor sounds like. Listen to those and compare.

I also would not recommend welding yourself, because if you screw up (it has been done by people attempting this themselves) you are NO better off!

Find a local expert like suggested off www.v8sho.com and have them listen/look. If you can avoid driving it, do so! :thumb:
