so friday afternoon im cruising home after work and about 10 miles into my 13 mile trip from work and back (about the only driving i do in my ************* SHO) the engine decides to just die out on the freeway. so i coast to the side of the road... the engine tries to turn over, i can hear the fuel pump... and i have battery power. the car just wont start.

so i get a tow back to my house. an hour later the car starts.

so i took the car to get some grocery's yesterday after having it towed on friday... got there and back just fine. then later on in the evening i took the car to a friends house that lives about 15 miles away on the freeway. got there just fine. on the ride home at 1am coming around a bend on the freeway the engine decides to die again. wont start. get it towed AGAIN. (TWICE IN TWO DAYS)

went out to the car this morning at the car starts up like a champ.

ofcourse the car doesnt start on the freeway for the hours that i was waiting for a tow truck, but it starts once its sitting in the driveway.

any ideas??

Try a search??? Have you replaced your CPS (Crankshaft Positioning Sensor) lately, if not that is probably your cause.

2nd for the CPS. Pain in the **** to replace but thats probably the cause. It tries to see where the crank shft is in relation to the cams (with the CID) and then when it can't read both it shuts down for safety. It won't start till it gets a propper reading from both sensors. Make sure if you replace the sensor to gap it propperly. Might as well do a new Waterpump and front side 60k since all the timing covers will be off.

You'll probably get a 211, which is the crankshaft position sensor. This is a textbook case of that sensor failing. What happens is that the water pump has a weep hole that is right above the crankshaft sensor (CPS/CKP). When the pump leaks, it gets the sensor nice 'n wet and hot. This shorts out the sensor, and when the sensor goes the car doesn't run. Period. After it's shut down the pump isn't leaking any more (cos it isn't running) and the sensor eventually dries off and starts working again. This is why it takes an hour for it to start again. If it happens again, there's no need to have it towed... just wait. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour.

You need to either replace, or have replaced, this sensor. It's not real easy, but the SHOPP website can help you out there. It's labeled "front 60K maintenance".

The SHO is not a *************; it only has ****** maintenance done on it. If you keep it maintained correctly, this car is every bit as good as any other! The onus is on YOU.

CPS issues

sounds like a classic CPS. second the motion on the maintenance issue. your engine is probably fine, just needs the sensor replaced. a DIY if you are mechanically inclined.

see webiste

or many forum posts for "how to" on this.

CPS is probably the problem.....I would check and make sure your water pump is not leaking and getting coolant on your sensor...I am going through this now mine did the same my water pump is leaking coolant and coolant is getting on the sensor causing it to crap out...when it dries out it fires right up then dies when the coolant gets it wet again....

I'd like to add too things. First, if it's your CPS your tach will go straight to zero. Keep an eye on you tach when this is happening.

Second, I have this problem when it's hot outside. It always has to do with the DIS on mine. If I spray something cold on my DIS the car starts right up. If I disconnect the connectors and plug them back in a few times it starts right up. It's worth checking out anyway.

I have had the ignition module fail after it gets hot about 10 miles... when it dies does it have spark? and also check the cmp and ckp signature while its hot..and compare to cold.

.

As long as your "CPS" stands for CAM POSITION SENSOR, you are correct. The tach will not work...but...the car will start, anyway.

If by "CPS" You mean CRANK POSITION SENSOR, then you WILL see tach movement when you are cranking.
