Im just wondering if there is any other way to actually pull the tranny and motor with out removing the subframe. I plan on pulling both out at the same time due to needing a 60k and tranny replacement. If there is another way can someone direct me in the right direction as to procedure? Thanks

i was under the impression that if you're taking both the engine and tranny out at the same time, then its easier to take them out the top. i've never done it though so i may be mistaken...

we have never done a sho engine removal w/ tranny thorugh the subframe. not even once. much easier to do it from the top. with an engine hoist that is.

When I did my motor swap with my ATX, I did it out the top. Pulled the motor/tranny as one piece. Wasn't that difficult at all. I could do it again in half the time.

Drain all the fluids so you won't make a big mess in the process. Then disconnect every electrical connectors, don't forget the two bolts that secures the steering rack, the axle nut for the halfshafts and don't forget to loosen the engine and tranny mounts. You can do this all by yourself but since this is your first time, have a buddy help. You can remove both engine and tranny together from the top. Just be very careful you don't pull out the brake master cylinder out along with the engine, it can get caught with it, its easy to do....

I don't know of any actual written procedure anywhere but what Xs SHO 1 said is exactly what you need to do. I think the only thing he left out is to take the hood off first. You'll also need to disconnect the y-pipe from the manifolds and the shift linkage (MTX & ATX) and cooler (if ATX) from the trans. It sounds harder than what it is really.
Also, you didn't mention whether your car was ATX or MTX. The MTX is pretty straight forward. I've never done an ATX before, though I think there would be just a few additional items to be disconnected.
Doug, when you did your ATX out the top did you use a load balancer to help get the motor/trans out? We'll be doing this on my son's 95 ATX soon and I had figured that we'd drop the trans first. If we don't have to do that then I'm all for it. I haven't really looked at what we're getting into yet though.

I then disconnected anything that connected the motor/tranny to the car. Pulled the half shafts, all the hoses, and I pulled the radiator. I didn't pull the hood, just disconnected the hood struts and tied it to a beam in my garage to hold it higher up. I then put hooks on each corner of the motor - using the intake bracket holes in the heads. I bought bolts and hooks for this - as not to damage any hardware I needed. Then used two pieces of chain and used them to make an 'X' over the motor. I counted the links and made sure each was the exact same length and that the hook for the engine hoist was in the middle of both chains. Disconnected the motor mounts....and pulled it out. It came out rather fast...once the hook was one...it was out in 15 min....The only close call was the master cylinder and the
hose that runs between it and the ABS brain. Also, make sure that the tranny is supported either from the bottom or the top before you disconnect the tranny mount....don't ask me how I found that out. Their is a little point on the bottom of the ATX tranny that is perfect for a bottle jack..it is just a little square spot...almost looks like it was made for a jack...it is below where the lines run in and out of the tranny that is useful to hold it up (you can see it in the pic there)
You can see the load balancer on the floor in the background....we tried it at first...then seemed much easier without it. I installed the new motor/tranny this same way.

Nice Doug! It's a bit more compact than I thought it would be. It actually appears to be smaller width wise than the MTX is. Hmmm......interesting.

It is heavier. A stock MTX weighs in at about 103#. I think the ATX is somewhere around 160# or something like that. But from the picture, it appears that the ATX sticks out from the motor less than an MTX does. Of course, pictures can lie too.

I don't have a pic of it handy, but you can't see the significant part of the ATX that wraps around the back of the motor.

200 lbs sounds more like it for the atx. Having three guys to move an atx is easier than two guys. The mtx I can move by myself, but its a lot safer with two guys....

My father and I could move the ATX around...three guys would have been way easier, but it was possible for us to do it. However, a single person could not do it themselves.

yeah im gonna be getting into all this here soon. im making my 93 atx into a mtx using wiring harnesses and computer. this is gonna be fun, i stripped the mtx right now and i just gotta pull the engine and trans.
i was wondering what size is the axel nuts? 30 mm deep well im guessing?
i dont have one nor know anyone that has one and i cant find one at any auto parts store so im sure a little road trip im gonna need to take to get it *sigh*
the mtx car dont even look much of a car anymore with no interior or anything but just an engine and trans sitting in it lol. this process isnt as easy as everyone says. well the way im doing it at least since there are tons of wires......

I have pulled an ATX drive train out the top before and an MTX drive train out the bottom. I would say that out the bottom was much easer.
