emergency/crank pulley mess??

guys, doing a water pump/CPS on my '91, removed lots of parts to get at it when I checked condition on the crank pulley. this is what i found. it doesnt look right to me as this is my first time digging into the SHO engine. is there supposed to be a nut or bolt in the middle where mine looks like its been ground down/drilled/and beat on. also you can see around the center mess is a thick washer like with large dents from maybe an impact hammer! can anyone post a pic of what the crank pulley should look like. is it the crank that extends all the way out through the pulley? how would I get the crank pulley off. thanks and sorry for the pics, the closeups are pretty fuzzy. call me if u can and i can describe more detail (248)-842-5911 (Bill and Chris).

guys, I'm workin on this & their is no hex shape left on what I think was a bolt head with a large thick washer! Is this a right=tight,left=loose thread? bolt head has been ground down & looks like sombody started to drill it for an easy out but only drilled it maybe 2-3 mm deep. The washer has big digs in it like somebody used a air hammer/panel cutter with a pointed bit to try to remove it if its not a reverse thread! ANYBODY please help. Call if u can. thanx bill

You guys are in quite jam here... I would normally say, just hammer a socket on there and bump start the bolt off. It would most likely work, however, this can't be too good on the main bearings.

What you might do, is tack weld a socket to the bolt and then bump start it off. This way, you won't to put all that stress on the main bearings.

Now you know why you got it cheaply!

Someone tried to remove the crank bolt, screwed it up, and abandoned the project.

It sounds like the hex head of the bolt is pretty well toast.

I would try the Craftsman Bolt-Out #13 (part of a $20 set) to see if it will bite into the remains of the bolt. If it does, try the starter-bump method to see if the crank bolt will loosen. It is not a reverse threaded bolt.

there is absolutly no hex shape left the bottoms are all cracked off and it looks like someone tried to drill into it about 3mm and stopped.

This would be my suggestion. Try to find a friend with a welder or rent one from a local tool rental place.

Bill and Chris, I totally feel your pain. The first time my crank bolt was removed it was a total mess. We tried bumping it off with the starter, no go. Using an impact socket on it, no go. Drilling it, no go. Welding an impact socket onto it, no go. Finally Bobby tried another impact socket on it with a heavy duty impact gun and it came out. (Fred, correct me if I'm wrong in all that we tried, but that's about the gist of how I remember things going.)

Hey all,thanx for replys! Soon as I saw it I knew we were in for sum more fun!! (swear) rant Damn hack FORD Dealer!! I'v got reciepts from dealer in NY. Car towed in,died won't start.Said WP pully cut CPS harness.Harness REPAIRED & tied back.(SWEAR, rant swear)There is at least 1 bolt missing from each cover! Plastic mesh on upper is all broke out!I see electrical tape & a tie wrap on harness as harness sticks out between lower & mid cover! Its not even routed thru the hole in the covers where it should be! (swear) rant Tape is mostly off & all full of oil. I,m sure now she needs frt main & prob cam seals! Got a new CPS but it will have to wait now! Just gunna do the WP frt half,re-repair CPS & route as good as I can. Deal with crank mess later! (Swear-swear) rant rant

After you guys told me about the crank position sensor harness I figured it was going to be a nightmare. It boggles my mind at the things people do to these cars, then totally abandon the project when they've half way screwed it up. I mean really....why not screw it all the way up.

First, I have a question for everyone else. Isn't there a "dimple" in the middle of the bolt? If his is rusted over, it could look like someone drilled into the middle. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember. I don't think that will help you anyways.

Next question, with welding a socket on there, isn't there some risk of damaging the crank? (with the heat of welding?)
I had a major problem with mine, but I have pictures of a way to get it off. What is your e-mail addy? I'll send the pics, and probably call you tomorrow, and explain what the **** you're looking at. If you can get ANY bite on the bolt, with a socket, this should work.
(yeah, just like the starter method, SHOULD work)
And by the way, there is no washer. It's just a bolt that kind of flares at the base. Call the SHO Shop for a new one. (they had a few a month ago) They're about $7 or $8. The SS's # is (714) 894-8415. Damn, I just recalled that from memory. That's probably a bad thing.

Nope they were very good mechinics, it definitly was the ford dealer because they never had to mees with the crank bolt. Ive got a reciept from the ford dealer that said that they "repaired the CPS" when the car died suddenly. To get the CPS of cource the crank bolt has to be off and i dont think they ever figured out how to get it off and decided to mess everything up. headbang rant
Its really quite sad about the ignorant mechanics if u ask me.
