The car (91 California) has been running a bit rough, sputtering, hesitating, ocaissional CE light. Pulled the codes and it came up 52 33 66 on the KOEO test, and 91 33 52 on the KOER test.

Looked to clean the EGR and as soon as I unbolted it from the intake, I could tell something was wrong. Tube was broken/rusted in half.

Possible solutions???

- repair the EGR pipe... with what and how???
- ditch the EGR and swap out the PCM???

Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Ebay has an EGR tube for about $50... but I didn't think these were replacable. Ford P/N was listed as F3DZ-9D477-F for 89-94 SHO's :braincramp:

The tubes are replaceable. They bolt to the rear exhaust manifold and (theoretically) the EGR valve. Over time they tend to become one with the EGR valve, so if you replace the tube I'd replace the valve as well.

Your existing tube probably broke at the bellows section built in to allow the pipe to expand and contract without breaking.

Either delete and swap to a non-California computer, delete without swapping the computer and deal with the constant CEL, or replace the tube. Unfortunately, your car was originally a California car so your state inspection will probably require a functioning EGR valve. If you delete it you may have higher NOx numbers and might not pass inspection.

If you do delete it, remember there's a hole in the rear exhaust manifold you'll have to plug as well as the one on the intake.

Yes, it split right at the bellows. Once I found it was busted, I was able to remove the top half ot the pipe along with the EGR, put the EGR in the vice and the nut spun off pretty easy. How much of a PITA is removing the manifold section???

It's not too bad. I think it was easier from the top with the intake off. If you delete the EGR tube you will also need to replace the rear exhaust manifold, the intake (or at least the rear tube), and the computer.

I was able to fix the EGR tube on the car. I removed the lower section and saw a crack had formed. Took it to my neighbor and he welded it up. I mated the broken bellows section by using a piece of hi-temp exhaust hose... never knew there was such a thing, but it exists! Just got back from a test drive and she's running like a champ again!

PS: Thanks Kirk for getting me the exhaust hose!

OK, back to square 2. The car started bucking again on the way home from work... and threw another CE light which came and went. Checked the codes and cleared them. Took the car for another test drive and the CE light came back on. Pulled the code and came up with 33 - EGR opening not detected. Wondering where I should go from here???

Should I either replace the EGR valve itself, or replace the EGR Vacuum solenoid? Not sure if the solenoid itself would throw its own code...

Thanks

Can a person delete the EGR valve, line and plug opening? Then just leave the solinoid in place to fake the computer out? Wondering about this for this poster and my own. Since I deleted EGR to rotate intake. Maurice
