EGR Control Question

I need help guys, and you have always come thru for me in the past. I am getting the 332 code and my passages are clean, new EGR, I can apply vacuum to theEGR at idle and the motor runs rough, so the EGR can work if the vacuum valve that controls the ERG would open when it is suppose to. I have a '92 MTX and have tried the suggestions that have been posted, to no avail. The one post that was the most detail, was for a 93 and later ATX...it did not help. My question deals with the valve that controls the EGR, there are two wires that go to it and they read about 12.0 V at idle. Should the voltage drop to open the vaccuum to the EGR, I know that the EGR is not open at idle or WOT, But should I see it open by increasing the engine, with the car stopped. If so, I don't...What else controls this valve... I have swapped a valve that worked off a different SHO and replaced all the vaccuum lines, still I get the codes... Please help, anybodies insight on this would help.

hey there...

I recently had a problem with my 94 ATX throwing code 332 with the EGR valve operating properly and the nostirls being clean.

Turned out to be my DPFE sensor. It is a silver box about 3"x2" located on the back of the intake manifold just to the left of the EGR valve. It has a electrical connection on the back of the box and two hoses that connect to the EGR tube itself.

Try replacing this module. Apparently they are available at your local NAPA for about $55-60.

BTW, can you delete your double post?

I don't have that on the '92, my 93 ATX does. On mine, the line goes from the exhaust manifold to the EGR. I don't have the two little lines that come off the tube running to the EGR. Also, how can I delete the second post...

go to the second post and click in the edit button(Between PM and QUOTE) then check delete and hit the edit button...

When you replaced/cleaned the EGR, did you reset the codes and if not has the CEL been on since you replaced it??? Also did you clean the EGR port on the intake.

You should also check your vacuum lines on the motor(might be a possible cause???).

Just a few ideas!

Check the pipe running up to the EGR from the exhaust. If there is a leak there it can throw things off.

The EVR (EGR Vacuum Regulator) solenoid activates the EGR valve at a variable duty cycle under the control of the PCM module when EGR function is called for.

Here is an easy test to see if the EVR and EGR valves respectively are operational: With the engine idling, momentarily ground the BROWN/PINK wire at the EVR solenoid. This should switch vacuum to the EGR valve and cause the engine to stumble.

During the KOER test, the PCM lowers (grounds)this line to test for EGR function. I recall from testing on my original 94 ATX that there was a marked drop in idle speed that coincided with my measured drop in voltage at that wire at the EVR solenoid. Upon repair of the system (DPFE sensor), the test executed so quickly that the test passed with a barely susceptible drop in egnine RPMs.

I tried to follow Steve's post, but my '92 does not have a DPFE that is connected to the exhaust gas line from the manifold to the EGR. I have cleared the codes, but will test the valve by grounding it.

The 92 probably has a single line PFE sensor.

FWIW, I find it interesting that a 92 has a three-digit error code. Thought it was 93 when it changed from two to three digits.

wouldn't it depend on the computer?

if you put a 95 computer in an 89, wouldn't it throw 3 digit codes?

and I think the change was in 92.

BTW, your old post was awesome...it helped me troubleshoot my code 332...

I have seen a 91 show three digit codes. I have also been told that the 91 Helms manual shows some codes as 2 digit, some as 3. shrug
