Have nay of you guys ever had an EDIS module just drop one of the primary outputs?

I spent about 2 days working on and off trying to figure out the dead miss in the SHO. After spending money on plugs and wires, it still had a dead miss. So I started back tracking to find out where the missing link was.

Cylinders 1 and 5 were not getting any spark. As you know these are companion cylinders on this engine, so I thought that maybe the coil pack was dead on that pair. Checked the primary and secondary resistance on all of the coils, and everything checked out. Get out the test light to check and see it the primary windings were even getting a pulse to trigger. Lol, not on the 1-5 pair. So at that point I was like, great now I have to track down a broken wire. Checked the continuity of the wire that feeds the trigger form the ICM to the coil. Checked out perfect. Finally, I back probed the output from the ICM with a test light with the car running to see if it was pulsing. Nope, but the other 2 outputs were so I knew that my test was good.

Long story short, I spent a good chunk of change and time trying to fix this thing while running across an odd failure. I am used to ignition module totally failing, not just one circuit. Lol.

This poor has been neglected so badly. I am slowly trying to get it whipped back into shape as I can afford.

:)

Well, I'll give you props on your detective work...but the DIS is so easy to change...that's the 1st thing I would have done...

Edit...after cleaning the MAF sensor...of course...

I agree a swap would have been easier, but actually finding out what exactly is causing a problem is priceless!

PS: there are several threads in the classifies with cheap used DIS modules.

Lol, thanks guys. I tried to narrow it down to a specific problem because I don't really have much cash to throw at this car right now. The car sat for several years before I got a hold of it. I have been using it to run my dad around in since he is confined to a wheelchair for now.

I also had 2 cylinders that had low compression. Kind of had me worried for a while, but I figure that it was just stuck rings. I soaked all of the cylinders with Seafoam over night and emptied them out the next chance I got. After running it to get all the carbon buildup out, they now have a good 175 pis of cranking compression.

I have been cruising the form for well over a year now, but for some reason my account hadn't been activated for most of that time. I finally had turboranger91 PM Bizzy for me since I know him from a local board.

Thanks again Josh. Even though you sold your SHO. :nut:

I got one off of eBay since I couldn't communicate with anyone off of the boards until now.

Next up. Clutch. :shakehead

The DIS fails on this car all the time, especially as they get older. It is a very simple fix, and I would never ever exclude it from a fault list for a faulty spark. I had one fail for an intermittent stumble... turns out the DIS was firing such a weak pulse at low RPM (I have UDPs) that it wasn't activating the coils all the time. As it got hotter, the RPM range for the stumble kept going up, to the point where it was bucking constantly... until the next morning. Rinse, repeat. Damndest thing was, the stock DIS from my wife's car ran perfectly, but a new $130 DIS from AAP had the same damn problem... but it ran perfectly in my wife's car. go figure.

glad you're finally getting that car back on the road. if you ever need a hand with it, you've got my number.

i may have sold my sho, but i still loved that car. it was so much fun and i'm sure i'll have another one someday... as soon as i can convince the wife to let me build a separate garage to house all my cars. lol.
