My 1990 5 speed SHO has a power steering leak and the steering wheel is easy to turn to the left, but hard to turn to the right. The fluid level is ok. Any ideas?

your rack has a problem would be my first guess. check your tie rod ends, make sure your ball joints are good too, get under the car and try and look at everything while someone else turns the wheel.

He's not just guessin'. He's probably right. Check it over visually, but it's likely the rack. Could be subframe bushings, too.

ya know, it's always nice to be validated.

Hey Kyle (kyle right?)

if you're not comfortable doing this or want a second set of eyes, i could be talked into driving down tomorrow. you got my number homer.

i just did tie rod ends on my wife's car and i have all the tools to do it if it ends up being that. if it's subframe bushings i got a set of gen 3 bushings we could talk about (i'll donate money to the forum if i sell em to him, Mods. i'm good for it. if Kyle doesn't need em they'll go in my wife's SLO in 2 weeks).

i've replaced steering racks on the SLO and SHO before. it's a friggin pain, but it's doable. especially if i can use my ramps and air tools and my bottle jack for the rear of the subframe to come down. just say the word.

Yeah its me Kyle.

One of the tie rod ends is probably bad, it has one a small tear in it. I had the wheels off 2 weekends ago and I think the ball joints are good, the subframe bushings looked ok visually, (assuming you can check them visually). I figured it might be the steering rack, looks like a real ***** to get to but I guess it builds character, right? lol. Do the aluminum subframe bushings cause any issues as far as daily-drivability? squeaking, rough ride, etc? Thanks for offering to help, I'm really busy this week so I'm not sure when I will get to this but I will let you know if I need a hand.

P.S. Does "SLO" refer to a base model taurus?

yeah. as in SLOw. my wife likes it, and honestly with it being an automatic and having the cushy split bench i like driving my wife's car more than my truck or the SHO sometimes.

as far as the NVH (noise vibration harshness) some people are bugged by it, whereas i don't get bothered by it. the fact that I'll never have to replace them again as long as the car is on its wheels, and the added stiffness to the chassis (at least the feel of it) is worth any extra NVH.

yeah i watch my baby girl from 9am-10pm while my wife works 4 days a week. i only really have wednesday, thursday and sunday to dicker around.
