I got my first SHO recently, a '97, and I am probably the 3rd or 4th owner, and I have some dumb newbie questions...

it has keyless entry pads, did it have key fob entry remotes as well?

it needs an engine, so while the motor is out, what should I consider replacing/having rebuilt?

I am considering having the trans rebuilt, what shift kit are people running?

1. Yes.

2. Transaxle, though from #3 it appears you are going to do that. Might as well toss the saxophone and put in a cold air intake to the inner wheel well while you are messing about under the hood.

3. Transgo is the one I meanly hear people using. You might also then want to get an Xcal-III and a PCM tune to take full advantage of the transaxle rebuild.

what is SARC? and does my '97 have it?

is there any merit to increasing trans life with a larger tranny cooler on this atx?

is there any difference in the atxs over the third gen run(so literally will any third gen SHO or SLO atx swap)?

1. Semi Active Ride Control, and yes, your '97 has it. It plays with sensing how you are driving and then modifying how the struts work to compensate.

2. Yes, there are available extra size transaxle fluid coolers and most seem to agree that they are a good thing if you are intending to run the vehicle hard. It also helps a lot to have a transaxle fluid temp gauge so you actually know when things are getting too warm.

3. Yes, there is. The transaxle in the Gen III SHO is not the same as the one in the SLO, so a swap is not advised.

You can program remotes for the 97 easy enough.

Personally, if I ever have the engine out of the 95 I picked up, I plan on taking the rolling chassis to the line-x place and having the engine bay done.

thanks for the info guys, no remotes came with it, so I guess I'm on the look out for remotes now too...anybody got part numbers for them?

Also, is the atx in the gen 3 SHO identical for the entire run?

Just look on eBay for any 4-button Taurus remote from 94-97.

The trannys are different for 96/97 and 98/99, however they can be made to interchange by changing the TCC solenoid.

No, '99 remote is different.

I bought some on ebay 6 months ago. You can get them from $10-20 or so. I got two for programming my '97 when i get around to it.

For what it is worth, when it comes to a Gen3 SHO, there are no "dumb" questions. In fact, this car will leave you dazed and confused most times, but I guess that is a good mental exercise, scratching your head and trying to figure out the problems.
