I cannot get my key in the driver's side door lock.

When inserting the key, there is a metal plate that swings out of the way as the key is inserted.

This metal plate will not swing out of the way like on a normal operating door lock and so I cannot insert the key.

I am hesitant about forcing it in because as I press on the key, the metal plate goes further in and is not swinging.

Can anyone explain why and does anyone have a repair solution?

I would like to use the same key and not have two keys - one only for the driver's side door and the current one for the passenger door and the ignition.

Thanks.

Have you tried a little WD-40 (or similar)? Sounds like something's binding up in there.

I've tried a similar lubricant that is used to break rust locked bolts. Maybe I should try a little powdered graphite.

There is a graphite based product at the parts store I have used that works; called something like Lock-Ease ?

I have seen a product that is in a squeeze tube that is powdered graphite and it is probably the same thing you are taking about.

I saw it at Pep Boys.

I'll have to take a run to the store there and try it.

Thanks.

To solve the 2 key problem I have been told that only one side is used in the lock. So if this is so, you can have one side cut for the ignition and the other side cut for the door you want to unlock. If it does not work what are you out, a couple bucks. I have never tried this.

This might sound like a nasty solution, but if you are in California - I wouldn't worry about that little closure flap being there. It is nice to have it where you have freezing temperatures, to keep the water out, but you don't have that problem. Give it an ample supply of penetrating oil and after a dwell period, tap the key in through the outer opening, and let the flap do as it may. If it breaks, are you any worse off? You will at least be able to use your key from then on.
