I probably posted this originally in the wrong section...

So some freaking a-hole decided to try to break into my car last night. He popped my drivers side door lock off but I chased him away before he could get into the car.

I'm looking at taking the lock itself from the passengers side door and putting it on the drivers side. Will this work? or does someone have an alternative solution without having to purchase 2 new locks w/keys?

Go to the boneyard and pull one out (easy enough) Take it to a loacksmith and he can re-key it to your key. You cannot switch sides on the locks because of the way the rod goes onto it, it would be backwards if you switched doors.

Ken - I'll have to research this, but last time I checked, the door locks were only available as a door/ignition lock set from Ford. The ignition cylinder was the only lock you [could] readily buy new from Ford. And as to be expected, the door/ignition lock set has been discontinued and is obsolete.

Whether the two door locks interchange, if I remember correctly they do not because of two reasons. First, the shape of the black plastic insert around the lock. Second, the lock cylinder housings are side-specific. I do know that there are different plastic actuators that connects the external door lock actuator rod to the door lock cylinder. The left plastic actuator is an off-white color, the right is an off-pink color, and the end of each door lock that the plastic actuator attaches to is side-specific (one side is a mirror image or the other).

Having spent over $100 to get keys made and locks re-keyed about a month ago, the least expensive option is to pick-up a complete used ignition/door lock set with keys from a salvage yard. The next best is to buy two used door locks with the keys and have the ignition cylinder re-keyed to the match the door locks. Expect to pay $20-to-$35 for each lock you have re-keyed, $30-to-$40 for each key made without an original key to cut from, and a $50-to-$75 service call if they come to you versus you taking the car/locks to them.

I may be able to find a NOS lock set if you're interested, for not more than the cost of getting used locks and having the ignition lock rekeyed. I'll just need to know whether you have illuminate door locks or not.

I was thinking about going to a salvage lot to pick up some new locks, but was thinking about the problem of not having the keys.

If you or anyone else could find a NOS lock set I would appreciate it. I do have the illuminated door locks.

My GF doesn't live in the best area. This is the second time I've had this problem here, both times my 91 Plus was broken into. This time I chased his ass of with a shotgun so he probably won't be coming back.

Thanks for all your help!

But he has illuminated entry on his Plus - the eBay listing is for the non-illuminated lock set.

Ken - did you find anything today?

I haven't had the opportunity to head out to the salvage yard yet. I'll be doing that this afternoon.

I saw that lock set on Ebay, but yeah, need the illuminated set. Thanks for keeping an eye out though.

Will do. Went there yesterday and didn't find anything. I'm headed back in about 30 minutes.

Storm-Chaser - I got your message, but I forgot my phone at home and I'm at work now... I'll call you tonight if 11:30 is not too late for you or tomorrow morning. Sorry.
