Hey everyone, I just got a 95 mtx with 110,000 miles on it and have no clue whether or not any maintenance has been done to it, i changed the oil and was thinking about doing a 60k to it. Does anyone know of anyone who knows how to do it and how much it would cost and whether or not its worth spending the money on, it seems to be running fine other than it only gets an average of 18 miles a gallon. Thanks for any replies!

To do the 60k you just need to do the valve adjustment, plugs and wires at a minimum.

Most places wont do it or will charge you $1k. I can do it and it is quite easy. SHOBros will be offering shims kits so you can do it soon. If you can do it yourself it is very much worth it.

Some SHOs need the valves, other dont. It really helps to do the the pulgs and wires as well as the valve cover gaskets.

To do the valves you need the valve adjustment tools and shims.

The water pump is more of a preventive maintaince that doesnt always need to be done.

If your only getting 18MPG I would check your codes for O2 sensors, they should throw a code. Or could be fouled plugs &/or bad wires. Pull the front 3 plug wires & see if there is any oil in the wells,if so you need valve cover gaskets so you might as well do the upper 60K=plugs,wires,gaskets & valve lash. I would not do the front 60K unless your waterpump is leaking or growling or the CPS has a code or its stalling out. I have Valve adjustment tools for sale & a shim kit you can borrow, see my ad in the classifieds & call me, I'll walk you through the process.

--Matt, good to meet ya at convention! Call me about the cam position tools if interested. Thanx

After you get the valve covers off use a feeler gauge. Like I said-call me I'll walk you through it. Some auto part stores will run the codes for you- or just do a search here.

Thanks Bill. I would be interested.

SHOtimes has a how-to on getting the codes with a paper clip.

If theres a tapping sound you might need a valve adjustment, otherwise it is good maintaince. I would do it.

I would say you should put a new CPS in there while it's apart because you don't want to pay a shop to do it if it goes bad and your far from home, and it's a crappy job to do on the side of the road - take it from me. I'd order ALL of your 60k parts from rockauto.com. They have excellent prices and wide variety of brands. Please don't go to Ford because the timing belt alone is like $190 or something rediculous.

It can get to be quit costly. It can run around $500-$1k. Unless a place has worked on the SHO they will find it indimitating. You need to find a place who knows SHOs or a locoal SHO person. It is quite easy and you can do it yourself. SHOBros will be renting out the parts soon.
