I want to make headers for my sho 3.2 I have extra 3.0 exhaust manifolds but as we know they are cast Iron and you cannot weld stainless to cast iron (so I have been told). So, where could I buy the flanges for the exhaust or would I have to make my own?

i think its a fair price for stainless...

watch it welding them tho stainless warps easy when welding and you dont want any warping.

just do stitch welding then fill in after cool down

A1011 HRPO isn't stainless steel.

The ATSM A1011 specification covers hot-rolled, carbon, structural, high-strength low-alloy, high-strength low-alloy with improved formability, and ultra-high strength steel sheet and strip, in coils and cut lengths.

HRPO stands for Hot Rolled, Pickled, and Oiled. It's process that removes surface corrosion after the hot rolling process. After the steel is hot rolled in to shape it is washed in inorganic acid to remove surface corrosion (inherent to the hot roll process) and then oiled to preserve protect the surface.

It's not stainless and it's not commercial steel. It's very high grade structural steel that has been treated to prevent corrosion.

You could weld stainless 304 primaries to this with 309 wire, argon, and a mig welder. Keep in mind when doing it though that it's really easy to blow through thin tubing with a mig. I tend to crank up the heat and wire speed and weld a series of spots all the way around the tube. Let it cool between spots.

I get good *********** and a flat, wide weld.

This is what I'm planning on doing for my mustang.

Either way you WILL have to go to a machine shop to shave them flat.

Even though I had some thick metal (not from shosource) , when I was done , the plate was crooked pretty bad. They had to remove like 1/8 to have it flat all the way.

Nonsense.

Ive done a few and was able to keep them flat by bolting the pair of flanges together when welding.

Stays nice and flat.

Those were flanges from Tom though, dont remember the thickness or grade of steel.

Those were 3/8" HRPO also. The guy that cut them on his waterjet for me specifically asked me if I wanted that and then proceeded to explain why I should want it. The guys that have TiG welded headers for me have never had a problem with warping my plates, but when another guy tried it with MiG, warped to **** and back. Bought another set of plates before I knew they could be machined flat and we used the "spot" weld technique mentioned above and they stayed flat.

I've got to learn how to use this TiG welder.

Yeah, I think the key to the mig is to alternate sides or bolt them to something flat.

Back when I had an airplane, I took it to a guy that made his own curved girders for his homemade quonset hut hangar. He bent these 3"x3" by 50' pieces of angle iron with an arc welder. He cranked up the amperage and laid a 2.5" bead every so often on one ******, alternating from front to back. Made the nicest gentle arc with about a 25' radius. Pretty dang cool.

Fast forward 5 years and I meet my futre wife's uncle, a master at metal working. He built his first major welding project for his brother, a stock rack to fit in the pockets of his 57 Ford truck. When they went to install it, it didn't fit. The welding with the Oxy Acet torch had pulled the uprights out of square.

Well, that wouldn't do so Dick went about practicing to figure out how much the steel piping would warp. He then pre-bent his pipes in the opposite direction and when the welding was complete, the legs fit perfectly in the pockets. Now that's skill. He was a true craftsman when it came to metal work.

min 4 sets, price is $110, max 9 sets, price is $110.

the only chance at a price drop is if i get this new job / when ive been there long enough to ask a favor like using their 1.21 gigawatt laster for cutting a slab of stainless.
