My son's SHO just failed Emissons Test, gas mileage is terrible, and performance is bad. I am thinking the cats are bad. AdvanceAuto sells the Magnaflow 96-99 catted y-pipe Part No: 23533 for $370.99.Using discount code "P20" the delivered price is $296.79 (free shipping). Then, the 3rd cat delete...

My wife is going to **** me for spending so much money on my son's car... think she will notice the sound difference?

Failing the emissions test doesn't mean the cats are bad.

Stupid to spend $300 on a part that you have no idea if it will do a single thing to fix the problem. Better to diagnose it properly first. I'd start by reading the codes.

I dont know alot about gen III's, but if this happened on my '94 the first place I would look would be the O2 sensors. Mine were going bad and it killed my milage. Made me run super rich.

Code is P0172.

What I have done so far... New plugs, New coils, New EGR pressure sensor, New fuel filter, cleaned MAF, New PCV valve, New air filter.

Car runs OK. Seems down on power. Gas mileage is terrible.

Vacuum leak probably. Look at your hoses.

DTC P0172 bank 1 indicate the fuel/air ratio is too rich. The fuel trim system is at the lean correction limit.

There aren't many vacuum hoses but the ones on the firewall or surge tank tend to rot or get brittle over the years.
