the valve cover was torqued down pretty tight. the valve cover was not leaking at all. all dry outside the engine. to me it looks like the bottom of the left two (the middle one more so) did not bottom out against the head causing the oil to get in. looking at my records, I changed these seals with the valve cover gasket 36,000 miles ago. I know I put some RTV on them when I installed them last time. I might just pop those 2 seals out and reseal with more RTV sealant. does anyone put this sealant on the bottom ring where it would come in contact with the head. on a side note, the head still looks spotless, no sludge. I always change the oil. I may hold out sometimes to 5,000 miles, but it does get regular changes.

I only use rtv at the oem locations on the outer VC seal. I don't use any on the round plug well seals. There should be a write up somewhere. Don't overtorque those VC bolts. They are very soft and if they snap off in the threaded hole you will have a real job on your hands.

These are SHOs. They don't leak in places that are convenient. Get practiced at removing rear plugs and wires with the intake still on. You'll have to do it a few more times during ownership.

update- took cover off. I saw very little if not any RTV on the bottom of the rubber plug wells. I removed the seals, inspected them, and re-installed with a nice bead of RTV on the bottom. put all new Motorcraft plugs in (the old plugs had 38,000 but the electrodes were really worn down). now cars runs better then before.

Give it some time and recheck the area that was leaking for any more oil--with the intake still on. :)
