differential grind when starting?

Every time I start my 92' MTX sho, I hear a grinding noise after I start to move forward. It seems to grind only right after starting the car (cold or hot) and when i turn the wheel to the left or right. Any ideas for what this grinding noise could be? I'm thinking something power steering or differential-related. Any help? Thanks.

What you possibly may be hearing is the strut insulators rubbing the inside of the strut tower.It can be repaired by installing strut spacer plates on top of both struts.Ford published a TSB on it .The part # for spacer plate is F3DZ-18A027-A. The P/S pump could also be making a whining/grinding sound.Can you hear the noise from iutside the car?

Chances are you are just hearing the power steering pump cavitate due to struggling to pump the extremely cold Power Steering fluid through the lines/rack.

Edit: If it happens hot too, I'm not sure what to tell you.

The SHO's MTX has been gifted with a rattling noise at first roll that has been attributed to "gear rollover." I'm not sure what that is defined as, but the tansaxles on both my SHOs have done it and I have seen discussions of many others who have also heard it. You may want to search the shotimes.com site and this Forum for the term above. It is not a sign of imminent failure, but an idiosycrasy of the SHO.

ok thanks a lot - Yes, I can hear the noise from inside the car (I've only heard it from inside the car because I'm the only driver but I'm sure it's audible from outside as well)I know my power steering pump is on its last legs because I think it's leaking and the pulley whines a bit (sounds kinda like a supercharger but really faint). I'll look into both the power steering system and the strut insulator-contacts. Thanks again for the suggestions.

yeah my PS pump makes noise too, makes it sound futuristic or somthing when i shut it down. but here's a trick for you for the PS pump, get it flushed professionally, then here's the trick. take some WYNNES friction modfier( the one in the tube) and put about a quarter to half a tube in there. quiets it right down. i'm gonna be doin that here pretty soon.

You can flush it yourself using a turkey baster. Suck everything out of the reservoir and fill with clean fluid. Do this until the fluid looks good and clean.

yes but professional flush includes flush fluid that breaks all the crap loose, but the key is in the friction modifier, i swear it works.

Yea, I am in need of a power steering flush. The other night when I was driving with a warm engine, my amp shut down because I was pushing it too hard (just shuts down until you turn the head unit off then on). Whenever this happens, I just make sure the clutch is out and quickly turn the as if I were starting the car. Doing this restarts the head unit...which resets the amp. When I did this, I heard the grinding noise that has been the topic of this thread. I am very confused now because I was driving STRAIGHT at about 35 MPH. This makes any power steering problem seem unlikely. Any ideas what the grind could be now?

What are you after?
The Grind noise at 35 mph?If so,
Does noise happen only with clutch in or out?
Does it get louder or faster with vehicle speed?
In your first post it say's about turning you hear the noise.Does it get louder with wheel speed and when turning right or left while driving at 35mph?If this is the case it could be a wheel bearing going bad.The noise would tend to get louder when the bearing has more of a load on it and quieter when load is shifted to the other side by rocking the steering wheel back and fourth while vehicle is in motion.This also will be able to tell you which one is bad.I do this to check which side is bad.If you have a weak stomach the rocking motion may make you :vomit:
for example:
If the noise gets worse when turning to the left the right bearing is bad.
------------the weight gets shifted to the right front when turnig left-------------
And opposite for other direction.
If that doesn't seem like what you're after,try getting more info on the who,what,where,when aspect of when you're getting the noise.

The grinding noise is the same wether the car is going 35 mph or 3 mph. I'm pretty sure it's my power steering pump but it could be a wheel bearing. Thanks for that suggestion. If it gets worse, I'll pay attention to the bearings as a possibility.
