Just curious if anybody has some good info on any of the various tranny coolers for the ATX.

I purchased a '93 a couple months ago as a porject car to tool around with and have been very pleased with it thus far. After doing simple routine stuff like fluids, brakes, and tires (full 60k soon enough) its time I focus my attention to one component that scares me like no other. The tranny. While the car is very fun to drive, the tranny is always in the back of my mind.

I bought the car at 139k miles and have driven it for 5k with no signs of slipping or burnt fluids or bands at all. It has the typical Ford slushbox properties but its been years since I've driven an auto of any type so I don't have much to compare against.

So, I've been planning for an ATF temp gauge and am finally taking the plunge to do that.

While I am doing that I would like to add a third tranny cooler or replace the ford air -> atf cooler. Anybody know what size the coolers at Midwest SHO are? I would like to keep the same width dimensions of the stock cooler, which IIRC would be 21".

Summit has a 30,000 GVW 10.5" x 21" cooler which seems like a bit of overkill. I figure I can always block airflow during cold spells (my 250 street bike is the same way), unless the pressure drop or flow rate across such a large cooler would affect the system too much.

Sorry for the long thread but I'm hoping to get some recommendations on what size coolers are the best choice.

It would also be a great help if someone can give a heads up on how to physically mount the cooler so as not to look like a total hack job. A picture is worth a thousand words for me!

Thanks in advance again, since I've been lurking this forum I've managed to go from a 8 mpg gas sucking pig to a 20 mpg bat out of ****!

I have a 5 1/2" x 11" Hayden that's rated for 20K GVW. I'm waitin' for summer to come to hook it up. I look at it now and wonder if it's big enough to really make a difference. I wanted to replace my stock one but the reply I got from most was to just add it onto the current setup and leave the factory cooler in too. I'm also wonderin' what's the easiest place to hook up the sensor for a tranny temp guage?

I orginally ran 2 20k Tube and fin coolers on my 95' then switched to a single 20k stacked plate cooler which cooled just as well as the dual tube and fins.

The stacked plate on our site is a 20k and is more than sufficient for it's application, especially when plumbed inline with the two existing coolers.

Mickey, your avatar made me laugh out loud. I've seen that picture with the poor kittens. I think it needs to be made more public than it is, and yes everyone..."Please for the kittens"
