Difference between 92 Tranny and 89?

A freind has recently replaced his cable style transmission on his 89 with one from a rod style 92.

here's the problem;

The tranny grinds in all gears except 1st and reverse.

Feels as thought the clutch is gone but it is actually new.

SUggestions? Syncros?

I'm hopping that installing the rod shifter will cure the problem...any other areas to approach? as far as I know, the clutch is fully adjusted.

is there a differnce in trannies aside from the shifter style?

did your friend switch transmissions so he could do a rodshifter upgrade? If he did, please promptly slap him! The ONLY difference between a cable shifter, and rod shifter tranny is the bracket bolted on to hold the cables. That's it. Casing is the same, internals are the same, axles are the same, etc etc.

negative. Diff pin took out the case in the 89. Bought a beater 92 for the tranny. It looks like the tranny from the 92 is toast though.

I'd just recommend doing a swap between internals on the 92 tranny then. Btw, did you adjust the clutch cable for proper tension?

Thanks. Yeah, the clutch was adjusted maually at the pedal. Gonna try to shim the cable up with Washers to test it to see if the cable is either stretched or actually different for the rod style tranny.
