Hello, I have a 91 & am thinking about adding a turbo. The car will be a dd but I still want performance. What's some good options for a budget turbo that I dont have to do any internal work but will give me noticeable gains if any are out there.

Thank you

"Budget" turbo kit only exists if you already know what your doing and build it all yourself. I'd shelf your pipe dream of budget boost and just drive the car for your daily.

you're looking at at least 3k on the very low side to add a turbo. tuning, injectors, fuel pump, MAF, and charge cooling will set you back at least a grand. figure at least 700 for a turbo that isn't an HX35 or undersized and then figure another thousand to spend on pipes and other odds and ends like a BOV and a wastegate if the turbo isn't internally wastegated. Even if you find a set of Toolman hot pipes you're looking at 450ish and then you'd still be in need of a downpipe.

Not worth it for a DD. For a weekend warrior, that is another story, and before turbo, first upgrade the chassis, susp., brakes, etc.. plus do all the maintenance.

If you are looking for a budget build with great response why not find a stock STI turbo. It will light up early and since you spend that vast majority of your time in the low and mid range it would be a blast to hit it with 6-10psi but will run out up top for sure. After being around my audi S4 for a few years after having a SHO with a 67mm percision on it I have run both extremes now. I have come to really enjoy early boost, but it has been a few years since I have been able to ring out a SHO and I do miss that because the audi just does not provide that satisfaction... My SHO at 14 psi was so much faster than my audi at 20psi.

budget: I think a STI turbo would keep the stock clutch reasonably happy as well. they are good for what around 300whp?

Also, scour ebay for older turbonetics 60-1 turbos. It's an older compressor design, and many tuners stay away from it. It does not provide enough airflow for a nasty V8 build, and it's not suited for high boost (22+psi) on the smaller Honda and Evo/sti builds, but I have found that it works very well for a 3.2 running 12-18psi.

In fact, I recently purchased a 60-1 HIFI BB turbo for my current Turbo SHO. I got it at a great price (orig price was $1600+) too. It should provide even better response than my previous 60-1 (which made 395/395 hp/TQ @ 13psi) due to being a ball-bearing turbo, but be able to flow a little more up top as it is a t4 turbine versus my previous T3/t4 setup. Hopefully I will be seeing 500whp/470tq at modest boost levels (18-21psi).

I really wish I would have had proper dyno pulls on my turbo SHO back in the day. It made 260whp on 8psi but ran a 12.7 @108 days before with the boost controller screwed in just a bit more. I was talking with RJ-22 the other day and he has helped re motivate me on the SHO powered camaro again now that the warmer weather is near.

but be aware that turbo'd SHOs and daily driver SHOs do not mix well together - 3rd gear is suspect already, and with "noticeable gains" it will be very easy to blow up the trans.
