Hey guys,

I posted this over at the TCCA and it was suggested to me that I would get more of a response over here. I'm just going to copy what was said over there. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey guys,

Today I was driving my SHO and it was acting really weird. When I came to a stop the engine would kind of cough, or sputter, I guess. The RPMS would drop to about 4-500 and then go up to like 1 then down to 700 where it usually idles. As soon as I would step on the gas it would go away. I had the air off.

Anyway, it hasn't stopped doing it all day. I went to a parking lot and popped the hood while it was doing it and the engine kind of jumps around from back to front when it happens. You can also hear it making a sound like "puh puh...puh....puh" when the rpms start dropping...if that makes sense. The service engine light is not on so there is no codes I'm assuming.

Any idea what it could be?

-Kyle

Well yesturday I was at a stop light and it sputtured for a minute real bad and then the service engine soon light came on. I took it to Auto Zone and it said "P0307 Cylinder 7 Missfire Detected." I went into the store and the clerk working said that it is probably a bad coil. (As mentioned above in 1fast97's post.)

So what can I do to fix this? I am also going to post this in the SHOForum like someone suggested so maybe I will get more replies.

Also, if anyone could help with like pictures or a good description on where cylinder 7 is located so I can find the spark plug and coil that would be appreciated. I'm guessing it may be up front because I know on my vulcan It was something like 1 3 and 5 where up front so on the SHO is it 1 3 5 7 are up front under the apperance cover or am I wrong???

Please help!!!!

The cylinder locations are like this;
-------------------------------------
1-2-3-4
back head

front head
5-6-7-8-

front of car
------------------------------------------
It also is not uncommon for coil to fail, coil is located above spark plug,I would replace the spark plug as well, all the plugs if tune up is due 60k.

Are your cams welded? Just considering the worst-case scenario. Other than that, coil pack failures seem to be common on these cars as well.

Hi, you're lucky that the bad coil is on the front, it will take you like 10 minutes to fix it. first disconect the battery, second remove engine vanity cover(the one that says V8 SHO) 4 nuts and 2 screws(10mm) socket, third remove 2 (8mm) screws on top of the coil (second coil from driver to passenger side) and remove the coil, put the new coil in place. Put everything back and enjoy your ride. Hope you can get your new coil cheap, otherwise youll pay betwen 90 to 150 for it. :thumb:

I know that you do not need to hear it, but I will say it anyways. $1000 now is better than 20-30 times that because you are searching for a new car after your cams inevitably let go. It is a roll of the dice, my friend. Good luck, and do get welds and soon as the fundage comes your way. :thumb:

There is a shop in Sacramento that can weld your cams. The cost shouldn't be any more than around $500. I paid $700 here in Wisconsin at Performance Plus, but that included a new set of plugs, power steering flush, and a diagnostic scan. It's cheap insurance - when/if your cams fail, you will be out more than the car is worth to fix it up :ruhroh: I bought my '98 knowing going in that I had another $500 out of pocket to pay for it, but it's worth it knowing that my engine will not self destruct :thumb:

Drive unwelded at your own risk, just don't say we didn't warn ya' ;)
