I have a 95 MTX and replaced the CV axle on the drivers side. Why, well long story short, I pried to ******* it when replacing the struts and pulled the joint apart and ruined the needle bearings. Anyways when I removed the old CV axle there was about a 1/2 quart of fluid that came out. Can someone tell me what the fluid is so I can replenish it? I have been told for a manual transmission, it was transmission fluid and can be filled by the plug on the transmission next to the CV axle shaft I removed. I remember seeing a plug, so that makes sense however before I put any fluid in, I would like for someone to confirm. One note is before I removed the CV axle, I put a quart of Royal Purple oil in the engine as it was low. The fluid that came out of the CV hole was very similar to the color of Royal Purple which has me confused as I would have expected red for transmission fluid. Thanks for your feedback.

It was transmission fluid. Top it back off through the fill plug and you will be all set

I would drain the fluid and replace with new unless you are 100% positive of what was in it before. ATF fluid is specified by Ford but a search will turn up many fluid options and many different brands. A complete drain will require the drilling and tapping of a drain plug in the bottom of the trans case.

The trans holds 3.1 quarts. Unless your like me and fill the trans through the reverse sensor on top of the trans and then you can make it hold probably 5-6 quarts. But I would not reccomend doing that. :)

Where to fill the transmission fluid?

I thought I knew where to fill the fluid but after looking at it tonight I want to confirm. Is it on the driver's side in front? I took a picture but am not sure how to attach it, which is upside down. I think it's the plug with the square hole to insert the ratchet shaft. Thoughts?

different transmissions like different fluids. find one that works best in your trans and run with it.

the fill plug is on the front of the trans and has a square hole in it to accept a socket extension.

Not to hijack but since his question has been answered and it's somewhat on topic.....is this a PITA job? The boot is torn on my driver side CV axle on my 89. I have an air hammer; just need a pointy chisel from what I hear as it helps in prying it out of the hub???

BTW to the OP, Chris (NEp8ntballer) and I have found that about a 3' piece of heater hose and a funnel works well to refill. I think it's 1/2" diameter; can't remember, but it will fit snugly in the fill hole and you can run the hose up vertically to the top of the engine bay and fill from there.

JRA2000TL - changing the CV axles has a couple of things that potentially make it a challenge. First is the 30mm nut. If it hasn't been off in a while, which is probably the case, it can be difficult. I shot PB blast on it a few days prior, used 4 foot cheater bar on my ratchet and it broke loose surprisingly easy. Second is removing the CV axle from the transmission. As stated in other threads, grab on to it and pull like heck. In my case, I pulled and pulled and pulled and nothing. What I ended up doing is using a pry bar and slowly and gently turning the shaft as I pried outward. If finally popped out. Don't pry too hard as you are putting force again the aluminum transmission. When putting the axle back in I pushed as hard as I could and was having difficulty getting it to go back in. I made sure the retainer clip was aligned as good as possible, and when I thought I had it aligned I tapped very lightly on the end of the axle to seat it back into the transmission. All in all it's not too bad of a project.

I did it in about three hours start to finish for the passenger CV axle.

1. loosen lug nuts and axle nut
2. lift front tire
3. remove tire
4. remove bolt holding ball joint in knuckle
5. remove TRE from knuckle
6. smack end of axle a couple times to break it loose from the hub
7. remove ball joint from knuckle
8. remove end of axle from hub
10. take a board and rubber mallet and smack the funny shaped part near the trans away from the trans to get it loose
11. remove axle
12. install new axle
13. put the ***** back together.

getting all the axle splines to line up inside the trans can be a bit of a pain but it isn't impossible.

Yes, that's the plug. With the car level fill until it starts to come out of the hole, then replace the plug. The new axle should be in when you do this or it's going to come back out there. ;)
