I am curious to know what the differences between the Mustang and SHO cruise controls are. I changed the rearend in my 5.0 and did not have the correct speedo compensation gear for the trans right away, and until I installed the gear in the transmission, the cruise did not work. (Neihter did my speedo) I am curious to know if this is the same for the Taurus, and also as to what drives the cruise. I thought it was vaccuum on one, and electronic on the other, but why would it not work is the speedo ger is not in the trans of my Mustang?

I believe the SHO cruise control is vacuum-actuated, and the speedo gets its info from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), which is located on top of the transmission, IIRC.
As for the speedo gear in the Mustang, I would imagine that the speedometer takes its reading from that, and not a VSS as on the SHO. If the speedo can't get a reading because there is no gear there, then the cruise control probably won't work (if it is electronic). Of course, I know nothing about Mustangs, so this is all hypothetical.

Ford has used the VSS for CC operation as long as I can recall and still does, AFIK.
Some CC systems are all electronic. That means only that the servo actuator is driven by an electric stepper motor instead of a vacuum motor. The rest of the system is identical in concept and very similar in implementation.
They all rely on the output of a sensor to determine what the relative ground speed actually is.

Yes, the ATX SHO has the electronic cruise. One tap up or down changes the speed by 1 MPH. The MTX SHO uses the vacuum type.
