Well, my 95ATX has developed a whine coming from behind the timing belt covers. After a search I found that this is probably a tensioner going bad. I also have noticed an increase in valvetrain noise coming from under the valve covers. I don't think this thing has ever had the shims checked, so that is probably my source.

So....since I DO NOT want to do this maintenance myself (limited garage space, limited access to proper tools) how much would valve shims and a timing belt tensioner run me to have done at a shop?

I would not take your car to some regular Joe mechanic. Go to www.shotimes.com to check and find some local SHO people in your area. Maybe someone on this site can stop by and help you out. Also, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can order the 60K video and do it yourself. After watching the video a couple of times I performed a full valve adjustment by myself without any problems.

Your shims should be fine once you flip 'em. You can get replacement ones from a Yamaha dealer or someone on here. As for total cost...whatever the book says hour wise + labor

Are you sure the noise is coming from behind the timing belt covers? The bearing in the idler pulley is known for making a whining noise when going bad. You can subsitute a Gen III idler pulley in its place. Try removing the belt and seeing if the noise stops, that will help determine the noises source.

Belt whine is not a symptom of a tensioner failure. Missing timing and loud knocking or belt slapping is a sign of a bad tensioner. Whines are associated with extremely spoiled women, bad bearings on pullies, belts that are too tight, oh and superchargers.

i have an atx that wont stay idled for a very long time, (i posted this problem on the maintenance section a week ago http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=52546) and my car makes this really really loud whining noise and i havent bothered to fix it at all, and now my friends are saying maybe the timing belt tensioner went on it. So would that be the source of the whining noise and the stalling out every 10 seconds?

Ive spent a good 600 dollars tying to fix the problem but nothing has changed.

Replaced:
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Spark Plug wires
Coil Pack
Fuel Pump Relay
DIS module
Cam Sensor
theres not much left to fix now, but the problem has not changed one bit
