Pulled the intake off to do the vc gaskets and its covered with residue. Thick. Intake and ports going into the heads. So much I can wipe a finger full off. What is the cause? Do I clean it all off?

I used some Berryman B12 in my intake, takes the crap right off. However, It will take the paint off of the outside of the intake as well if it gets on the outside.

If i remember correctly, The gunk is from PCV vapors condensing in the intake since it is cooler than the rest of the engine.

The cause is the EGR and PCV that vents into the intake. You can't stop it from happening.

The EGR ports in the intake can become clogged if it is real bad. Berryman's B12 works best to clean it out - but rest assured it will get dirty again.

You can implement a catch can on the PCV vent hose to cut down on the goop in the future. Of course, you will then have 1 additional maintenance item!

I agree, the catch can idea will cut that down dramatically.
