Well next week it is spose to warm up and I'm planing on changing my crank since it snaped in half. My question is what is the best way to do it? Motor in car or out of car? or just drop the carrage and do it that way? I'm lost and what are the steps to accomplish my goal with less hassel

Thanks

Mike

either way, either the motor or tranny have to come out to gain access to the flywheel bolts

i would say(becuz thats the quickest and easiest way for me) is to pull them out togetther from the top and slap that motor on the stand and have her rebuilt

junk-yarder motors are good for some people, but for me, i likle having the peace of mind of knowing what has been done to the motor. So thats why i rebuild them before buying a junkyard one

I. Understand you there. This motor only has 18000k on it. It was just rebuilt three years ago and the po had the crank machined and dint kno that it weakens it, and it broke on me just my luck right. is it quicker and easyer just to drop the carrage out from under the car and put the motor on the stand and do it that way? And when doing that what connectors and hoses ect. Have to be removed?

You're in for a lot of work. It can be done in one day tho. Get someone who is familiar with the process because there are a lot of little wires and connections that can hold you back. I'd say drop the subframe with everything on it, it makes it a little easier. Of course you need to get the actual car up so a lift would help. I did mine with some blocks of wood and an engine hoist.

Oh and slap the PO for ruining your crankshaft.

If you open up a junk yard motor, you'll know exactly what's been done with a motor. While you're in there, replace bearings and seals. The '89 junk yard motor (of unknown mileage/history) that I put in my '92 was probably in better shape (after bearings/seals/60k) than most "well taken care of" motors on this forum. I don't doubt that thing is at 200,000+ miles on it and I beat the crap out of it on track. The current owner of my car has put at least 60k on it since he bought it from me 2.5 years ago, and I got a message from him on this forum this week saying the car is running great.

I. Understand you there. This motor only has 18000k on it.

That's gotta be a record!

I agree, pull it an put it on a stand. You have to take the heads off to get the pistons and rods out anyway (balance).

Question? Why do you have to pull the head off to remove pistons and rods? Can't you just remove them out of the bottom of the block or will I hurt something

Thanks

The real question is, 'how are you going to take them out without taking the heads off'.

No, they will not come out the bottom without altering the shape of the piston :)

Another question. do I need to pull the pistons, because when the car started the slight knock I shut it off immediately and had it taken to my house and started to do rod bearings, and found out that the crank had a hair line crack all the way around, and I stopped what I was doing. so should it of hurt anything or 50/50

Yes, you need to pull the pistons/rods/rings/etc to get a balance. I would have them resize the rods while they're out. A micropolished crank and resized rod with a new bearing will be LESS likely to spin a bearing.

When you say "balance" do you mean the balance of the journal size compared to the crank? Sorry I'm asking never really did internal motor work

The more that's said, the more I'm confused?

Cracked crank??? These are one of the strongest OEM cranks made, what did you do to it to cause a crack?? and where is the crack located??

No, I mean balance the rotating assembly. An off-balance engine will quickly shred itself.

It sounds like you need to research on how engines work.

The crack is located between the #1 and the #4 crank journal. I was told when the crank was machined it looses its tincel strength, and makes it more weak. And before this happend I had to replace the key and timing gear, because it started crank cancer an the car was running terable due to timing not in set

How far of a machining have you been taking it? I know some of the most powerful SHO's in the world have had some sort of machine work done to the crank.

It seems like we are arguing on why the crank broke and what did I do wrong to it. The PO HAD THE WORK DONE NOT ME and I was left with a note book that listed what was done to the car and motor. This motor has ran fine and has gave me no problems untill the timing gear issue, and what caused that was the bolt for the harmonic balancer was loose, and I was told by RICKETY that with the timing gear bouncing back and fourth will change the timing and could cause tennision on the crank to cause it to breakn and yes these are one of the hardest cranks. But only the outer part of the journarls are because these cranks are hot rolled on the journals to make the outer 0.002 of an inch extreamly hard after you shave that off it looses the strength and makes it weak. unless the shop is smart and rehardens the crank journals, so yes other people have there crank turned and its fine good for you but I'm not having the same luck as you so please quit jumping down my throat I'm just asking for help. I'm not asking to be treated like I'm freaking stupid. So if you want to help help then if not shut up DAM!!
