Adding another SHO to the garage for the wife. It's a 2014 CPO with 78k miles. Was debating getting an ESP. What are everyone's thoughts? Looks like its $985 (base care) to extend for a year beyond the cpo as it comes with the 1year/12k mile Bumper to bumper, which covers it to 90k miles. Then the limited cpo to 100k miles. This was on lombard website. Dealer wanted 200 more.

Does the CPO limited powertrain cover enough to not need the basecare to the 100k mile mark?

I believe to bring it up to the 120k mile mark for base care it's around 1300.

Years dont matter as I'll burn through the mileage before years are up. I like to drive.

I would look at just a powertrain warranty for as long as I could get one just before your existing one runs out. You can shop a few on line. They were mentioned in another post somewhere. You should be able to get it covered to 140-150k miles. This is one of the few vehicles where I think the extra protection cost isn't a bad idea.

I always opt for the max when available - Premiumcare to till whenever Ford covers it. Otherwise, definitely Basecare to the max. If you drive a lot, and I am assuming highway miles, you really shouldn't have any major issues. The lower the average mph for your trips, the better off you are with a warranty.

I don't always go for extended warranties but the few times I have it's been worth it. With some big money items, turbos, PTU, water pump I feel it's worth it on these cars. I had the dealer work in CPO when I purchased and added premium care on top of that. Just had the PTU replaced under the CPO warranty.

If you are going to spend $985 might as well spend $1300 if you plan on keeping the car.

ANY consumer group/publication/organization/advocate, will tell you that warranty's are a poor investment 90% of the time. The statistics are overwhelmingly against the purchaser. Consumer Reports and others have done studies which showed that: "55 percent of owners who purchased an extended warranty hadn’t used it for repairs during the lifetime of the policy, even though the median price paid for the coverage was just over $1,200. And, on average, those who did use it spent hundreds more for the coverage than they saved in repair costs.

Among survey participants who used their policy, the median out-of-pocket savings on repairs covered by extended warranties for all brands was $837. Based on a $1,214 average initial cost, that works out to a net loss of more than $375. Factoring those who didn’t use their policy, the median savings was zero."

The overwhelming advice was to put aside whatever you would pay into a warranty, and invest it in a money making fund. IF needed for any major repair, withdraw as needed. Chances are, you'll have a healthy fund left over.

That said, I did purchase a warranty on my SHO. I wouldn't normally, but I came from a Lexus, and I was a little worried about reliability in a Ford. Plus, I got a great deal I couldn't refuse. I'm also getting older an not as eager to do my own repairs like I once did.

Ever wonder why dealers spend more time and effort selling you a warranty than they do selling the car? They are betting you won't use your warranty and you're betting you will. It's a gamble and just like in Vegas, when gambling, the house almost always wins.

What you're buying really, is piece of mind. Just like insurance.

This is in acceptance of the fact mainly that, as Christian mentioned, a) we really don't make the time or have the space to work on our own cars anymore, and b) finding the right part can be a nightmare, especially at a decent price. Better to let someone else handle the financial headache, as long as you are good at winning arguments, LOL.

I am looking at the base care warranty that extends it to 125k miles and until 2021. Lombard has discounted the price to $1123 for that plan. I ran it by the dealer where I'm buying the car and they said there is no way anyone can sell the warranty that cheap and the dealer is probably not marking the warranty sold. And dealers apparently try this all the time and they get their program shut down. The dealer I'm working with said his cost is $1280 for the same plan.

That's what they say. These Ford warranty sellers have been offering these discounted prices for many years now.

I have heard of that happening. The dealer will typically honor the warranty work and keep the full amount because as Christian pointed out the average repairs are less than the average cost.

Having the CPO limited warranty for another 22k miles is one of the reasons I'm leaning toward not buying the extended base care.

I bought the base care for my other 13 sho pp and that cost me $1400 for 24month/24k miles. Didn't need it and it just ended as I passed the 100k mile mark.

That's way too much for 24/24. I would shop around powertrain only and more mileage. I got a quote for my f150 4x4 with 90+k miles at 4yr/48k for $1130. I would really only consider the powertrain worth the money to insure on this vehicle. There are enough issues cited by owners to cover my bases on this platform. You need to shop that price around to internet discount Ford ESP sellers. Lombard sends me discount codes and stuff all the time since I requested an initial quote and I have heard of them price matching if you can find a cheaper price on the same product.

I’d just go for powertrain and go for most time/mileage you can. The electronics and ancillaries in the Taurus are pretty reliable and are not cutting edge. There are lots of parts out there cheap off wrecked ones, too. My dealer is too stupid to fix anything electronic anyway. Lol. I wish I would have just done the powertrain esp myself now instead of premium. I have been in for service two times for technology issues and ended up fixing it myself both times after the dealer said there was nothing they could do.
