Hi,
I've been off the boards for awhile because of 'problems at home'.
Anyway, I want to start working on the SHO again - I think I have major problems with the front suspension.

Here's the symptoms:
I feel almost like a hammering in the steering at 50 mph and above when coasting (it gets better when I put the gas on).

When I start and stop I feel the steering column move.

The car lunges to one side when I pull out fast.

Finally, there's a clunk if I turn the wheel to the right full-stop - then start left (when parked).

Any ideas what the heck is going on? It's had the rear subframe recall done. I'd really like to find it and do it myself - not much money left to pay a dealer!!

Thanks for listening!

I work at NTB. Friday, I will print out your comments and ask the alignment expert what he thinks. He's going to be hooking my car up with some suspension mods soon, and he knows the SHO, he's just ****** he's stuck with the 3.0 duratech in his 99 SE

If ya go to the dealer they will run the VIN. They have a database on each car that has had recall work done.

Danvers, MA!!! I'll be there on Saturday oddly enough. One of my buddies is a chef at Bruto-Le and a bunch of us are going to harass him.

Thank you. Is the recall free of charge as well?

I won't be working tomorrow, but I'll be at work for a few minutes putting snow tires on my mom's car, and picking up some ******* at the mercury dealer for my mountaineer. I'll keep an eye out for your sho. I'll be in a burgandy red volvo 850 wagon. Bryan, I talked to the mech for a quick second and he said he'd like to see the kit before he makes any estimates. Fine 89, it was so busy today that I only had a chance to chat with the mechanic for a few minutes, I will get an answer from him soon though.

Hmm maybe your Halfshaft? I get a clunk when I turn my wheel all the way to the right and then back to the left and I'm pretty sure its a halfshaft.

Ok, my mechanic said you are looking at not one problem but a bunch of them. The hammering is most likely a balance issue on the wheels. The movement of the steering column could very well be subframe bushings gone bad. My subframe shifts after they did the recall. The clunk could be a halfshaft, and the lunging sounds like a typical crazy SHO torque steer. It's FWD, there's a drawback to it. He recommended that someone look at it, because that's the only way you will tell for sure. Free checks at NTB and sears.

I got a free dealer estimate. They said the moving steering column is because it needs both motor mounts and the vibration is from the wheels.

I didn't get it done - they want $500 for the motor mounts (installed). Time for anoth estimate.....

Did they tell you what the clunk sound was from? I'd say yes, get another estimate, but make sure that whoever estimates knows the SHO.

Good luck!

Beth, I had a clunk sound also, turned out to be my balljoint on the passenger side going out. I swore my subframe was shifting... Oh well, I lovvvvve that 50% discount at Napa, and how they let me work on my car at work (NTB)

I got some new tires on the SHO and the shake is GONE! Still have the clunk/steering problem but gonna wait to get the motor mounts.

While I was road testing it, I was on the highway and went to pass an Eclipse GT, the girl in the car didn't want to get passed so she got on it. I just did the same and passed her at 80mph. Must of shocked the **** out of her to see this 89 taurus speed by so quick! I love these cars.

When I am at a stop and I turn the steering wheel all the way right and then left, I get a clunk as well. I already have new front and rear reinforced motor mounts. I have replaced the ball joint on the passenger's side and I have new outer tie rod ends. I know that I need new subframe bushings but I am worried from people saying it may be the halfshafts. Does anyone have an idea of what this clunking noise might be.
