Does anyone know what the correct timing is supposed to be on a stock 3.0L? I put a regular inductive timing light on and i'm getting about 10.5 degrees. If this is wrong, how do you correct it? I'm only getting like 11 mpg. I don't think thats very good. Any suggestions?

The timing is controlled by the PCM. The only way to force it to 10 deg. BTDC is to pull the SPOUT shunt near the EEC test connector wiring and CID sensor wiring. Should say basically that on the VECI label on the radiator sight shield.

FWIW, timing is usually not the first place to start when trying to diagnose a problem unless that problem is symptomatic of a timing problem (i.e. backfiring). Start with reading the codes. Links on how to do so are in my signature below.

Your first train of action is to go and read the codes. If you click the first link in my sig, there is a link on the bottom left of the page that gives you instructions on how to do this.

With this motor, there can be a lot of causes for low gas mileage. A few that come to mind would be a clogged exhaust, a broken or dirty Mass Air Sensor, bad lambda sensors, an improperly operating EGR system, etc.

Reading and posting the codes here will help us in determining where you need to look next.

I'll check the codes and see what I get. I had been getting the check engine light like if i didn't let it warm up but it would go out after a brief period. And when I checked the codes I got a 111. And no saved codes?? I don't know I'll check it again.

Also a previous sympton with this car was during a cylinder balance check I got a weak #2. I redid the FIs but haven't done another CBC yet. Any suggestions?

Take a good look at the plug and wire on #2, if you haven't done so already...make sure the plug is clean and properly gapped, and the wire is clean making good connection. Your problem might be something as simple as a bad plug or connection.
