I was playing in the garage today and wanted to better my air induction. I decided to keep the factory air box and get as much air to it as possible... so I did this. 20160717 113518
Full corner view.

I simply cut a square on the outside and then cut the inside out to keep the "cone shape"

Here's a close up. I sealed the sides with silicone and sprayed the inside black. I'm hoping that the silicone will keep the moisture out... even though it's never outside lol.

I can really hear the Ole girl breathing from the hole and it definitely seems to line up to the intake well.

Thoughts?

Being on the side of the car like that, I would actually be concerned about the vacuum effect pulling air out of that hole, as opposed to it actually drawing air in. You might want to do some testing.

That's a very good point... I didn't think about that.

The only thing that could be a saving grace, is that the opening is not flat on the side... it's more rounded. The inside is also shaped like a velocity stack.
That was my thought process when doing thiso.

The only way I can think to test it, is to tape it shut and make a drag pass. Then open it up and make another. Then compare times....

What does better air induction mean to you? I think stuff already tried on many different vehicles shows true ram air setups only make a marginal difference at higher vehicle speeds.

Well I'm looking for the freshest, coolest air to make sure the complete system is ready for nitrous.
I want good, properly pressured exhaust and the ability to induce lots of o2

Ah extra modifications make this more sensible than just a standalone hole for induction. You doing a wet or dry kit? You have access to a 2nd vehicle?

I've had more experience with wet kits... but I see most prefer dry on this forum. I'm trying to do further research now.

Absolutely. This car is a weekend warrior/sleeper car. It will rarely be out honestly.

How're you going to keep rain out of the filter box?

edit: Just saw that you will be using this car for special excursions. That makes sense.

I remember Jeremy Thomas back in the late 90's/early 00's had a similar side opening. Maybe even more so to the side of the car and affixed a small air scoop. Not sure how effective it was but maybe help capture air in vs vacuum. Anyone have a pic of jthomas68's old white SHO with the kooky scoop on the side?

I was just spit balling a similar idea. I'd like to see his car.

I was thinking the slightest protrusion would cause enough turbulence to get rid of the vacuum. Like a single piece of metal at the back of the housing (by the door)

Here's a pic from the front. It looks like it should catch some air... we shall see. 20160718 163543
