Hey guys, I just recently finished up my front/upper 60k on my 93 MTX and I'm having some issues. First I'll give a bit of background on the car. I bought it a few months ago to replace my old 91 Plus I sold to a friend of mine. Found this one on Craigslist and liked it, so I picked it up after checking out the Carfax. The car has a lot of miles (168k), but after going over the Carfax, it was pretty obvious they were highway miles. Car was local too... furthest it has been (owner-wise) was about 30 minutes from me. When I got it, the car ran good with no leaks at all. It just felt a tad sluggish (91 felt quicker... but maybe it was because it had the famous Gen1 squat), but seemed to run great... good idle, went WOT just fine. Only issue with the car when I got it was the 1-2 synchro likes to grind when it's not warmed up.
I did all the work myself and did a good job I'd think. car started right up on the first try, and ran just fine. There were some coolant leaks (small hoses from the T/B to the manifold), but otherwise everything was ok. I got some new hose clamps for the small hoses and tried m best to clamp them on, but it still leaked. I found some super small clamps, and got em on the best I could, but I noticed the car likes to run really hot now. The car ran fine before I messed with the clamps, it just leaked a little (well... a decent amount, ha). Now, after attempting to fix the hoses a few more times (I was having a **** of a time fitting my hands in there and clamping the hose clamps), it wants to overheat whenever it's running. The fan works just fine, so I know that isn't the issue.
I've driven it a few times since then (just down the street and back) and it still does it. When I get home, there is coolant oozing out of the hoses (like before), so I know the radiator is getting flow and the (brand new) thermostat is opening and closing fine. Water pump was also replaced so that shouldn't be an issue. My friend said since the hoses are leaking still, that the loss in pressure is messing up the flow.. I don't think that is correct, since it ran fine before this, even with the leaks. My only idea is that somewhere in the system, I'm not getting any flow. Even when I am cruising at ~45 mph, it still tries to overheat. Before, and with my old 91, if I was moving at a constant rate of speed, the temperature would drop significantly.. That tells me coolant isn't getting somewhere in the motor, and the airflow alone isn't enough to cool it off.
Any ideas out there? Or have I covered most of the bases? I checked all my hoses... they look fine (aside from the two I still have to tighten... but they shouldn't be my issue). I am freaking stumped, and this is the ONLY thing I need to fix for the new SHO to become my daily driver!
