My experience with the V8 t stats is they are very reliable. I still use the original one in my '97.

Sounds to me like you may have air in the coolant system. You need to "burp" the system by running the car with the radiator cap off for a while so the air can make it's way out. Keep refilling the coolant as it goes down.

Air in the system will cause your temp gauge to be high, then low, and so on.......
Good luck

One of the things that is totally different about the V8 as compared to the V6 is the cooling system. The tank is part of the pressurized system. It has a small hose that bleeds off coolant from the heads. There is never a reason to have to burp a V8 or any other Taurus engine from '96 on due to this degasser tank.

It either is not holding pressure, one of the fans is not working or the radiator is clogged externally if there are cooling problems. The OP has already stated he has a leak.

True. I just realized that this was in the v8 emergency section. The OP already stated that he fixed the leak though........

ok here it is... the leak has been fixed no more leaking period. i filled the tank ran it with the cap off and on, no difference coolant does not move, both fans turn on, there are 2 small hoses into the tank one is from the radiator the other is from the block, when the car is running coolant is coming from the block but not from the radiator, when i squeeze the coolant hose next to the battery, it squirts out, but like i stated i have not yet seen the coolant level drop then return it has stayed in the same spot as it did 2 days ago when filled it, i was always under the impression, when the engine gets to optimal temp, the thermostat would open up and the fluid would drop, then return when cool, this is not the case. But on the other hand i am assuming that there must be fluid going through the engine considering for the last 2 days it has not overheated, and as far as i know, if there is no coolant going through the engine you can cool it all you want whether its air cooled or fan cooled it will still overheat.

The small hose going to the radiator only vents the top of the radiator to the tank, there should be no movement.

The level in the tank should just barely change one the system is stabilized.

If you have the cap off then the system is depressurized and will not function as it should.

There should be very little flow through the tank.

The V8 t-stat is on the lower hose. When the t-stat opens then cool coolant from the radiator is blended in with the coolant circulating from the heater core and feeds directly to the heads.

The V8 is very good usually at maintaining the temp. But once it goes it will spike right now and not come back down.

Do you have a black top tank?

Did the temp gage leave the NORMAL range?
