I used the search button but couldn't find anyone else who had mentioned this noise in their SHO before.

on my 95' MTX when I drove it as a daily driver it was most noticible.
between 30-40 MPH when shifting into 3rd gear (nice and easy driving) there is this winding up noise which almost sounds like a little turbo in my car (that would be sweet) but thats not the case.
Just wondering if anyone else's car makes this noise ?? and if you could tell me what it is, because I am most curious.

(it also could sound like a bomb dropping through the air)

anyways because it is a consistant noise I do not believe it is something "wrong". Any feedback I thank you in advance

It's probably just a hint of gear whine from the trans. I've noticed it before too.

Could be a timing belt that's a bit too tight, but that tends to sound more like a supercharger than a turbo.

Trans.

My brother does NVH research (yes, at Ford) and says it's one of the loudest transaxles in the world; louder than "modern" transaxles with the fluid removed.

Everytime he gets in the car, though...he's got another gripe about NVH...

Typical conversation when he's in the car...

Him: Gawd..that trans is loud. Is there any fluid in there?
Me: yes, steve. It's that old Mazda trans...remember?

Moments later....
You got a cylinder missing? Engine sure seems rough.
Me: no steve, I have solid motor mounts.

Moments later...
Him: Hmmm.
me: what?
Him: nothing. Well. drop it to third and hold it at 70...
Me: (downshift) what...?
Him: There's a 1st order driveline noise I haven't heard in...does this thing have a balance shaft?
Me: no balance shaft, steve...
Him: oh. OK.

The rest of the ride is usually spent with him trying to track down that squeek that can only be heard if the radio is off and the widows are up.

He he doesn't ride with me anymore.

On both my 89 and 95 I can hear the trans, every shift you can hear the syncros as you shift. No big deal.

I have a whine in my 95 MTX, but it's constant and gets higher pitch the faster I go. Some of the guys on the forum here told me it might be the bearings going on the tensioner pully or it could be the power steering pump. I still gotta check it out, but maybe it's the same for you?

Does anyone know if any local parts stores (Advance, Autozone, etc.) would carry replacement bearings or pulleys, or am I gonna have to spring the $40+ for the replacement bearings from SHOSource?

Maybe you are talking about air sucking noise? I can hear my stock CAI making air sucking noise under acceleration.

If that's not the case, it might be gear rollover noise. It usually happens in lower rpm range. You don't have to worry about gear rollover noise since most of SHOs make that noise, and it is normal.

Mine happens whenever the car is running, not just in gear so I'm thinking that would rule out the trans noise. It happens all throughout the rpm range and gets louder and higher pitched when accelerating. It's definitely coming from the passenger's side of the engine, so I don't believe it would be the intake. I just don't want the pulleys to freeze up on me, but I don't wanna spend more than I have to to fix it right now.

It's most likely the bearing in one of the belt tensioners... Figure out which one it is, and place a WTB ad here on the forum. Somebody will have a good used one. I don't know of any stores that carry the pulley/bearing.

If you take off or have no timing belt covers you'll hear a whining sound like a turbo. I've got a hole in my upper timing cover and I can hear the whine.
