Confused about timing belt function

This may sound dumb, but what pulleys does the timing belt turn? Before seeing photos, I always thought the SHO engine worked by having belt-driven cams, like the Ducati motorcycles. But looking at photos, I see chains going over each cam sproket. Does the timing belt drive one cam per cylinder bank and then that cam drives the other cam by chain?

Yes, the timing belt drives the intake cams at the front of the engine, which drive the exhaust cams via chains at the rear.
