Hello all, I searched the forum, but I am a bit lost. My mechanic friend and I did the upper 60k maintenance. While we were there, we noticed that the cam chain tensioner was broken. I found a front and rear tensioner at the j/y. they were in good shape and firm against the chain. We re-timed the cams, and put the car together. The car ran like new for 30 miles and then quit. It will not restart. I am thinking that maybe my timing belt had gotten old while sitting for over 15 months. Any ideas?

I think we need a little more information then it quit... such as what have you tried so far and what did it do.

pull the cross over tube and upper timing cover off and check it if thats what you think? it would take about 10 mins to check

Your timing belt did not get old while sitting around.
If the car ran for 30 minutes, you will have codes in the memory that will guide you to the problem.
Short answer is either spark or fuel.
Pull a wire and hook it to an external plug to see if you have spark while rolling over.
Push on the little tire-type valve on your fuel rail to see if fuel is present.

Ok. I will pull the timing cover just to check. I have fuel at the rail. I will check for spark also when I get home. Sorry I didn't have more info. I was just driving home from and it quit while running. Checked all fuses, and will have to wait until probably Thursday to take anything major back apart.

When I tried to start the car, it turned over, and then backfired out of the intake. I have already confirmed fuel at the rail, and have not been able to check for spark. I was thinking a backfire from the intake would indicate spark, and lead to timing issue. What do you all think?

More info. I wired the car like the diagram below. I have an extra DIS previously working, from previous troubleshooting and I have tried both. New Coil, wires, and plugs with upper 60K. Just Timed the cams and replaced the cam chain tensioner. Not sure if the (new Junk yard parts) were good, but seemed good on the j/y car. The car was running like new when it stopped running. Is there anything else that can help me?

If it backfired my guess is your timing belt jumped a few teeth and it's out of time now . I'd take off the top cover and the timing belt tensioner bolt cover and check to see if it came loose .

My thanks to everyone. Found out that the bolts for the camshaft sprocket had sheered off. Went to the j/y and picked up a cam, sprockets, and new chain. Also noticed that when the bolts sheered, the timing belt jumped a tooth on the rear cam , and on the crank. It runs like new now. Thank you for all the input.

Well now that it runs well, its time to take care of the A/C. The way dad told it 7 years ago, was that it just needed to be recharged. Guess I will see.
