My wife says its good for a car to start it and let it run for about 5-10 minutes before driving in the morning when its cold. I had read somewhere that modern engines don't need this and it is just a waste of gas. Any views?

It's not really necessary, although I like to let the idle settle and give the fluids a chance to circulate. Usually no more than a minute or two though.

Its NICER to get into a warm car with the heater/ defroster doing thier job. Its annoying, at best, to see a driver trying to clear the windows with a rag while going down the road.
