So, what exactly causes the #8 coil to interfere with the MAF? I have had a problem with this for some time now and have changed the #8 coil a couple of times and the problem is still there.

IIRC it is the coil misfiring that affects the MAF and this happens inside the PCM. Not always coil 8 either.

No codes, no noticeable misfires or stumbles, and I have cleaned the MAF some time ago. My car is doing the same thing that the SHO is doing in that "You-Tube" video that is in another recent post, if that helps any.

you could just switch coil 8 with coil 5 and it could act fine. but that coil does have issues

this is the tech info about it if you wanna read up on whats happening.

Yeah, that would be the one. The second link is clearly what mine is doing. I have swapped coils 5 and 8 and no improvement. I have some other coils and have swapped them out with #8 as well and still, no improvement.

When you had this problem, did it affect the shifting of the transmission?

What is wierd is that my problem started last February when we had some freakishly cold weather and it snowed down here. My car was fine that morning, pulled it out of the garage and drove to a relative's house where it sat all day outside in the cold. That night when I was driving home was when it started running bad and has been that way ever since.

i really dont know all i remember doing is replacing the coil that was at least a year or so ago.

i dealt with the issue for a year till i found out that once i changed coils around when the motor was apart for a while that the issue was gone then came back.

Okay, I would guess that taking it to somewhere like Autozone would not work then because they say that the "check engine" light has to be on for their scanner to read codes, so I have to find someone with a better scanner or break down and take the car to a shop to be scanned. If I buy a scanner, what is a good one?

autozone scaners can pick up codes when the light is on they just say that so they dont waste there time. i got once of the cheapo scaners that autozone use's and it will pick up codes with out the light on.

If not coil #8 would it possibly be another coil from the front bank, or can one from the rear also cause the interference to the MAF?

Well, I have swapped the front coils around and was swapping out the #8 and #7 coils with some extra ones that I have. I found one of the coils that I swapped to be bad because after I swapped it out, when I cranked up the car, the engine was skipping right away, so I threw it out. I don't think I have a coil problem but it seems that maybe I need to replace the MAF sensor. You can floor it when it is acting up and it sounds all bogged down until it almost dies, or sounds like it is going to die anyway. I am going to take the MAF off and clean it but this time I will take it apart.

I bought some "CRC MAF sensor cleaner" today, anyone ever use this stuff? Last time I cleaned the MAF I used carb cleaner followed by brake cleaner, now I have read that those cleaners should not be used and can damage the sensitive wires in the MAF... Great.:bonk: Hopefully I haven't screwed something up. I didn't remove the actual sensor from the meter housing either, this time I will.

So, my project tomorrow is to remove the MAF and thoroughly clean it with actual MAF cleaner and go from there, hope it works.

i used the stuff on my sho and my gf's mafs on her 90 Bonneville. since i have used it i think it started to give both cars an issue with starting? dont hold me to it.

no trouble codes right?

i had code (dont remember the #)mafs inconsistent with tps

i was able to switch the coils are resolve the issue. maybe like stated b4 its not an issue with #8

Well, that was a waste of time. I cleaned the MAF and there is no change. I am going to pull the intake and remove the aluminized tape that I used to wrap up the wiring harness, could be causing an interference, and swap the coils from front to rear and see what happens. If I cannot fix the problem myself, the car will go to a shop and I will go from there. If it looks like something major, then this may be the end of my SHO experience.

make sure you take it to someone that KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. or it will get you no where and cause more issues!
